The Oakland Athletics will try to counter all that by sending — who else? — a rookie to the mound. ''We've been the 'David' all year,'' A's right- hander Jarrod Parker said. ''I think obviously it's a role and an image that we've kind of taken on and been able to embrace and it's fun.'' Parker will start against Detroit ace Justin Verlander in Game 1 of the division series Saturday night. The AL Central-champion Tigers are making their sec- ond straight playoff appear- ance, but Oakland emerged as one of the game's biggest surprises by winning the AL West. Now the A's have to contend with Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera — the Detroit third baseman who might win the Ameri- can League MVP after Ver- lander took the award last year. ''We know we've got a great ballclub. We know what we have in the club- house,'' Cabrera said. ''We know we're going to face a very hot team like Oakland. They play unbelievable baseball right now.'' Cabrera hit .330 with 44 home runs and 139 RBIs to become the first Triple 49ERS Crown winner since 1967. But he wasn't the only big story in the closing days of the regular season. The A's rallied to win the AL West, edging Texas by one game when they beat the Rangers on the final day. had the lowest opening day payroll in the majors. ''Obviously with Ver- lander going Game 1, you've got to be on your game,'' Parker said. ''We have a lot of left-handed bats that are hot right now, and I think that's one thing we've got going for us.'' Outfielder Josh Reddick, one of Oakland's left-hand- SF looks to avoid letdown Bowman and Patrick Willis will harass the quarterback. The defense will probably force a turnover. Frank Gore will run for around 100 yards and Alex Smith will pro- tect the ball. Everybody pretty much knows what to SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — NaVorro expect from the San Francisco 49ers by now. That's hardly the case with the Buffalo Bills. Piling up points one minute, handing them out the next, what Bills (2-2) team trav- els to the West Coast to face the 49ers (3-1) on Sunday is anybody's guess. After allow- ing 45 second-half points in an embarrassing 52-28 home loss to New England last week, the only certainty is that Buffalo better bring its better half. Park following a 34-0 dismantling of the New York Jets that finished off a two-week stay on the East Coast in style. ''You can't let things affect you that you San Francisco returns to Candlestick don't have control over. We have no control over what's happened up to this point. It hap- pened. It's there,'' Bills coach Chan Gailey said. ''Now what are we going to do from here? How strong can you be from here on?'' wins fizzled in about 22 minutes against New England last week, when the Bills gave up six touchdowns, a field goal and 580 yards. They became the second team in NFL history to allow two players with 100 yards receiving — Wes Welker (129) and Rob Gronkowski (106) — and two with 100 yards rushing — Brandon Bolden (137) and Stevan Ridley (106). Suddenly, problems are popping up all Buffalo has yet to find the answers. All the good feelings from two straight over the place for a team that entered train- ing camp believing it had the pieces in place to end a 12-season playoff drought. Mario Williams has a sprained left wrist and just 1 1/2 sacks, 11 tackles and a fum- ble recovery after leaving Houston to sign a six-year, $100 million contract that made him the NFL's most expensive defensive player. (same-day tape) MLB 12 touchdown passes but is also tied for sec- ond-worst with seven interceptions. And running backs C.J. Spiller (shoulder) and Fred Jackson (knee) are still slowed by injuries. Buffalo, which snapped an eight-game road losing streak with a Week 3 win at Cleveland, starts a string of four of its next five on the road. The Bills will practice in Arizona next week to get ready for the Car- dinals instead of traveling back East, similar to what the 49ers just did staying in Ohio between games at Minnesota and New York. ''This is a stretch of games here,'' Fitz- patrick said, ''that we are really going to fig- ure out what kind of team this is.'' San Francisco seemed to rediscover its identity in the Big Apple. A dominating defense kept the Jets out of the red zone all day and a ball-controlling offense ran for 245 yards. The romp reaf- firmed the 49ers as one of the NFL's elite, erasing memories of that 24-13 loss at Min- nesota in Week 3 that is suddenly looking like an aberration. About the only thing the Niners need to guard against is another letdown. San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh even talked for the first time this season about the fictional character he invented last October named Freddie P. Soft, a novel nemesis who tries to sneak into team headquarters and dis- rupt preparation by filling his players' ears with motivation-sapping praise. Harbaugh joked that players noticed Soft ''might be lurking'' at a practice a few weeks ago and it's no longer something he needs to address. Instead, the only outside presence in the 49ers locker room this week was Hall of Fame center fielder Willie Mays of the Giants to give a pep talk. ''The message is, 'We've attained humil- ity,''' Harbaugh said. ''I couldn't really say when that is for each person. Personally, it was a long time ago. But that carries with it no loss of true pride. Nobody's walking around here like we're the greatest thing since sliced bread.'' • 3 p.m. TBS — Playoffs, American League Division Series, game 1, Oakland at Detroit • 6:30 p.m. TBS — Playoffs, National League Division Series, game 1, Cincin- nati at San Francisco SOCCER • 4:30 a.m. ESPN2 — Premier League, Sunderland at Manchester City • 12:30 p.m. NBC — MLS, Chicago at New York • 6 p.m.NBCSN — MLS, Salt Lake at Los Angeles Sunday AUTO RACING • 11 a.m. ESPN — NASCAR, Sprint Cup, Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500, at Talladega, Ala. • 4 p.m. ESPN2 — NHRA, Auto-Plus Nationals, at Reading, Pa. In 2006, the Tigers swept the A's in the AL championship series, and there were snow flurries at Comerica on a workout day between games. Verlander (17-8), the pow- erful right-hander who had two playoff starts cut short by rain last year. ''I saw a little bit of rain today, but I saw actually on my Twitter of all places that it's not — no rain in the forecast for tomorrow,'' Verlander said. Verlander led the majors in strikeouts this year, and Max Scherzer — Detroit's Game 4 starter — finished second. Cardinals beat Braves 6-3 in disputed playoff ATLANTA (AP) — David Freese and the St. Louis Cardinals rediscovered their postseason touch. Chipper Jones and the Braves kept throwing the ball away. In a game protested by the Braves, Matt Holliday homered and the defending World Series champion Car- dinals took advantage of three Atlanta throwing errors — the most crucial of them by the retiring Jones — to take the winner-take-all playoff 6-3 on Friday. St. Louis advanced to face Washington in the best-of- The Braves are done for this season, the recipients of another heartbreaking loss in the playoffs. The 40-year-old Jones is all done, period. He man- aged an infield hit in his final at-bat but threw away a double play ball in the fourth, which led to a three-run inning that wiped out Atlanta's early 2-0 lead behind Kris Medlen. But this one-and-done game will be remembered for the eighth, when a disputed call on a fly ball that dropped in short left field cost the Braves a chance at extending Jones' career. The Braves thought they had the bases loaded with one out after the ball dropped between two fielders, who appeared to get mixed up over who had called for it. But left-field umpire Sam Holbrook called Andrelton Sim- mons out under the infield fly rule — even though the ball landed at least 50 feet beyond the dirt. When the fans realized what had happened, they lit- tered the field with beers cups, popcorn holders and other trash, leading to a 19-minute delay. That only delayed the inevitable. When play finally resumed, Brian McCann walked but Michael Bourn struck out to end the threat. Dan Uggla grounded out with two aboard in the ninth to end it, leading to one more wave of trash throwing as the umps scurried off the field — probably feeling a lot like those replacement NFL refs who caught so much grief.
