10A Daily News – Saturday, October 6, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith How do you know you're following God's plan? START MOVING FORWARD The Rev. Holly McKissick, pastor, Peace Christian Church in Kansas City, Mo., and Overland Park, Kan.: "Go forward," she kept saying. "Go forward. Then take a left at the light." "Which way?" I asked. "Forward." I kept thinking, why doesn't she just say, straight, go Living on shifting sand or a solid rock? straight. Forward. If you ask another gay person, you might just get the same thoughtful response. My church mem- ber learned this expression when she was coming out of the closet 20 years ago. Go forward. It was not a put-down to folks who were straight. It was a call to live as she was created to be, to recognize that she was made in God's image. That was Jesus' challenge to the disciples. They were a part of the "inner circle," but at times they were clue- less. Jesus' words went over their heads. He called them to a new place, but they wanted to cover the same ground. "Jesus, everyone is looking for you, let's go back to our old stomping ground; they loved us there." Jesus responded, "No, let us go elsewhere, for that is what I came out to do." Elsewhere. This is the only place in the New Testa- ment where that word is used. It's a powerful word, a guiding word. As the saying goes, "if you are not attempting something you've never done before, you will never grow." If the road looks familiar, chances are good it's the wrong one. IS IT THE RIGHT THING? Rabbi Avi Weinstein, head of Jewish studies, Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy: Free choice is axiomatic in Judaism. The choices between right and wrong are usu- ally simple. tion regardless of what the consequence might be. This time of year is one of profound reflection for Did I do the right thing? It's always the right ques- in many ways. People want and need to feel safe and secure. As humans our number one basic need is survival. To be sure that basic need is filled, there are many who want others to take care of them and tell them everything is going to be okay. If we listen to what we hear on the radio, news, or even what is being said by others, the mes- sage can be confusing as well as alarming. For one who has been priv- ileged to have lived a long life, I am writing in hopes to give encourage- ment to others. Things are changing all around us talked about freedoms, he said he was troubled that so many people take for granted what we have. He reminded me of the free- dom I have to dress as I desire where others can- not; I can go to school and get an education where other women cannot; I am free to drive when and where I want, and Ican go out in public alone. Thinking back when I was young, I remember when I first started dri- ving a car back in 1902; the price of gas was twenty four cents a gallon. Well, it wasn't really in 1902, it just seems like it. Although that was many years ago, it is true never the less. We were free to come and go, drive with- out seat belts and ride without hel- mets. Since then laws have increased and freedoms decreased, while prices continue to soar. Time moves on and now we are in a new age with cameras everywhere and privacy a thing of the past. In the midst of all the changes taking place, there is one thing you and I can count on with certainty, and that is the God that doesn't change. He is the same yesterday, today and for- ever. He also promises that He will never leave us or forsake us. So when I wake up each day I remind myself, "New mercies I see every morning". I mentioned freedom because I The harder decisions are those that seem to be morally neutral, but they still have the potential to wreak havoc with life. the Jewish faith. Redemption awaits on the other side of the gate, and penitence is the key that opens the hearts to higher purpose. know my freedom came with a huge price. Although the 4th of July has passed, it never ceases to be celebrat- ed in my heart. Recently my neighbor was sharing his view of the 4th. As he I celebrate my spiritual freedoms by coming bold- ly to the throne of Grace. Although I am female, at one time that was not allowed either. I also cele- brate the reality of freedom to be "Me". I am free from the tormentor of my soul because Christ set me free from the kingdom of darkness and put me in the Kingdom of Light. He came to set the captives free. I am free from guilt, shame, fear, sorrow and darkness in every realm. What is the ultimate freedom? Freedom from fear, for fear has tor- ment. Fear of failure, or fear of suc- cess; whatever it is called if it makes us fearful it is torment. As we hear or see the news we know it will not be good. Therefore, in my own life, I am continually learning to accept the things I cannot change, and change the things that I can, while asking God for wisdom to know the differ- ence. That is freedom. Because others gave their lives and fought for our freedoms I get to live safely in my own country. I am not, nor ever will be politically cor- rect in some eyes. I am a true inde- pendent American and a patriot at heart who is eternally free. I know what my rights are. Free- dom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom to bear arms are my rights, not some government granted privilege. Because I am a Christian I have other rights and freedoms. I am free to be me, to love God, to love my neighbor as myself. I am free to forgive and to be for- given. Brenda Ballentine GodTalk to enjoy it. Our soldiers are the gate keepers who are protecting our free- doms. I pray we all remember to pray for them, and do our part to real- ly love one another and pray for each other. We are blessed to have the privilege and responsibilities that come with living in this great coun- try, our country, America. Please pray especially during this time of elections that God will be glorified and remember…"Let Freedom Ring!" I do not wait to celebrate my freedom one day a year. I celebrate life and freedom every day. I realize the ulti- mate price of freedom came at the cross. Our country was built upon that founda- tion and gives us the liberty Brenda Ballentine is a licensed clinical social worker with an MA degree behind her and a doctoral degree in her future. She is best known in Tehama County for her work with burn survivors and first responders through the Northern California Burn Foundation. Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Peshischa, Poland, a great Hasidic master, once said that the definition of humili- ty is to be able to sincerely see yourself as you truly are. Such awareness of strengths and flaws is what we have the potential of knowing, and with this awareness it is possible to know what we are supposed to do with the choices that are presented to us. It will also help us improve and grow as this season of penitence and atonement requires. There might be many paths that one may choose, but a true sincere spirit will have God's approval, and God willing, his support.
