Corning's junior quarterback Chayce Maday had one word to describe the game — "rough." Maday, who rushed for 73 yards on 19 car- ries, and completed five of 14 passes for 51 yards, said the game plodded along with a lack of excitement, which could have been remedied with a touch- down. And Studer said Maday could see more passes in his future. "More and more teams are going to mimic what they did to us defensively," Studer said, adding, "So to be successful we are going to have to throw the ball more, which means we're going to have to practice it more." The Trojans capped off the night with a 39- yard touchdown run from junior backup quarterback Tyler Batchelder with about a minute left in the game. The senior has helped Chico thrive in the passing game, at a time that its running game is nearly nonexistent. Indeed, even against the struggling Spartans (3-3, 0-3), who lost their third straight, Chico earned just 33 yards rushing on 22 attempts, a 1.5 yards-per- carry average that's a far cry from the balanced attack the Panthers rode through the playoffs a season ago. But if Robbins and Reid can truly coexist in the passing game as they did on Friday, it may not matter. Robbins was in fine form, again showing masterful accuracy on short and intermediate routes as he completed 22 of his 33 attempts. He capped off his huge evening with a floating touch pass to Ryan Bar- nett, a 14-yarder that made it 48-16 in the third quarter.
