Saturday, April 3, 2010 – Daily News – 5A Religion Faith&Worship Church news Special Easter service blitz The First Southern Baptist Church of Red Bluff, under the leadership of Transitional Pastor Dr. Monroe Broadway, is cooperating in a national television and neighborhood blitz to introduce the message of Jesus Christ to the North State. Members from the church first went to various parts of Red Bluff and prayed for those families within that section. This was followed up a week later by person- ally inviting more than 1,000 families to Easter services April 4. Easter Services on April 4, will begin with Bible study for all ages at 9:45 am, followed up by Worship services at 11 am. The worship service will consist of drama, special music by the choir, under the direction of David Pace, and morning message, "Are you con- fused about Easter?" Nursery care is available and all services and min- istries are absolutely free. The public is cordially invit- ed to attend the Easter services at First Southern Bap- tist Church, 585 Kimball Road. Can one live a good life without any religion? Religion creates a framework for good The Rev. R.L. Baynham, pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan.: This question poses a difficult response, because we assume that everyone accepts the meaning of good. Good is relative and allows each individual to draw his or her own con- clusion. The good we seek to achieve has to go beyond the practice; it has to do with "to be." When we accept the teachings of God and develop a personal relation with him, then the inner man changes and seeks the good in life and strives to be an example. We are all born spiritually good Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery: We all know "good" people who are not religious. So it is obvious that involvement in religion is not the only prerequisite for being a good person. H.H. Dalai Lama said, "There is ... no reason why the individual should not develop love, compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness ... even to a high degree, without recourse to any religious or metaphys- ical belief system." But where do these spiritual qualities come from, if not from religion? Our minds are infinitely malleable, and change is always possible. By meditating, we can begin to gain some insight into why we keep making the same mistakes, and through this insight we are able to change. First Church of God We invite you to join us for Easter Service Sunday, April 4th 10:15 am Corner of South Jackson & Luther 527-5717 Easter — It’s a season Editor’s note: This is the first in a two-part series on the Easter Season. Easter is about access. Easter has always been about the reality that mankind – every one of us – was given unlimited access to the Lord our God the day the Son died and rose from the dead. His gift is without limit or qualification regardless of whether we are believers or not. The conditions under which life exists on this planet were permanently changed over the three-day season of death, descent into hell, and resurrection. Of course, it is not – and has never been – our access to Him that is the issue around which eternal and abundant life revolves. Our access to him makes us eligible for life in His name. But it is the access we give to Him that activates that eligibility. That is why He says – in Revelation 3:20 – that He stands at the door and knocks, rather than, "Look, I swing my door wide to admit you." Until we give Him access to us by deciding for Him, by turning away from the creation we have attempted of our own lives and toward the cre- ation He is making of us, we have nothing of value – no stake in the gift He gives. Two dimensions of this reality are illustrated well in the parable of the vineyard workers (Matthew 20) and the healing of a paralyzed man (Mark 2) following the forgiveness of his sins. In the first episode God offers the same wage to every member of His workforce regardless of how long their laboring has gone on. Each is required to actually go into the vineyard and work, but all have the same access to the owner’s generosity at all times of the day. In the second God – the Son – gives forgiveness for sin and separa- tion from Him to the man lying on his mat without any hint that the man has properly regretted those sins. He even heals the man of his paralysis without a prior declara- tion of faith. But the healing word is entan- gled with an equally healing word of com- mand – Rise and Walk – because until the man stands and takes advan- tage of the gift there is no pragmatic impact of his healing and forgive- ness. If we would receive the gift of life we must turn and receive it – we must act on it by inviting Jesus into our lives as Lord and King – and we must activate that access in some practical way. Jim and Diana Wilson GodTalk The traditional Gospel readings associated with this season of Easter reinforce the seasonality as well as the practicality of the answer to the access question. Traditionally Easter spans a fifty-day period bounded by Easter Sunday on the one end and Pentecost Sunday on the other. It is all about cel- ebrating His gift of unlimited access on the one hand and preparing to make a life of giving Him progressive access on the other. The second Sun- day of the season emphasizes His call to the disciples (John 20) to go out and do what He has done – forgiving sins and inviting into Life – with special emphasis on the lengths to which Jesus will go to extend that invitation. He even permits a doubting Thomas to physically inspect His wounds and is rewarded by the first declaration that He is indeed both Lord and God. The third Sunday emphasizes the fresh start (John 21) that is available as the disciples land a miraculous catch of fish and yet find Jesus has already prepared breakfast on the shore – and a question; "Do you love me more than these? Then feed my little ones, as I feed you; let go and do likewise be your guide for life." The fourth Sunday expresses the challenge (John 10) to act on the basis of what we have seen of Jesus rather than looking for some rhetorical guarantee. The fifth Sunday takes us (John 13) to another challenge – to serve rather than The sixth expecting to be served. Sunday challenges us again – this time (John 14) to actively love as we have been loved; only then can God come and live with us. The next-to- last Sunday of the season contains Jesus’ prayer (John 17) directed to us – that we would be one as He and His Father are one. And Pentecost sends us out to act on the access we have progressively given Him. It is indeed all about access – the process of repentance – and the season for that which is the climax and con- tent of life lived in Him.
