INSIDE PUBLISHER'S PEN by JANICE BURTON I wrote as a writer for Up & Coming Weekly was about a play that was set to open at the CFRT. I was not ignorant of the ways of theater, having been actively engaged in the community theater in my hometown. Those shows, while nowhere close to the professionalism of the CFRT's offerings took a lot of time, talent and love. I went to the interview thinking community theater — like that I knew, where we actually did our plays in the old roller mill and costumes were what you could come up with. Man, was I in for a surprise. One of the first stories Calendar ........................................... 14 Concert Connection ........................ 18 Movie Review .................................. 21 Free Wheelin' Feelin' ....................... 22 CFRT: Great Stories Are Told There When I moved to Fayetteville in 1997, I had never heard of the Cape Fear Regional Theatre; it wasn't long before I knew it very well. The first came at the doors of the theatre. Yes, it is intimate, and the seats are really close. And sometimes, you wish there was a non-smoking section so you didn't have to sit next to the smokers. But once the play begins, you forget all of that and become immersed in the magic. My next big surprise was Bo Thorp. She is elegant. She is funny. She is talented. She is the kind of sophisticated that I would some day like to pull off. But I'm not holding my breath. And finally, the third surprise was the caliber of the actors and actresses, many of whom are normal 9 to 5 people who work routine jobs during the week and create magic on the weekends. They blew me away. So, that first visit to the theatre made a lasting impression on me, and I've been a fan ever since. Like many in the community, I was saddened when Bo announced her retirement. She had been more than the glue. She had been the spirit of the theatre. Who could fill Fayetteville's Weather Forecast October 5 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Friday Thursday October 4 Saturday October 6 the community by listening, rather than dictating. Working rather than demanding and taking the time to get to know the community before making decisions. During the 50th Anniversary Season of the theatre — Tom's first season, he took a backseat and worked quietly behind the scenes. He made sure the legacy of those who started the community was honored in a fitting manner. And he did what he does best, he directed a number of shows during that season ensuring that the story, not the cast was the central element to the play and that it was told well. The announcement of the 51st season brought a lot of excitement to the community, and with the staging of Jesus Christ Superstar, Quaintance announced his presence with a vengeance. The show, currently on stage at the theatre, was an awesome way for Quaintance and his crew to open the season. And I believe it has set the tone for the future of the theatre — which isn't so different from its past. It has always been a place where great stories have been told, and Quaintance will continue that tradition while moving the theatre to the next level. Bravo. those shoes? After more than a couple of years of looking and searching and pondering, the theatre board announced their choice of Tom Quaintance as the new artistic director. Tom, for those of you who have yet to make his acquaintance, is a pretty likeable guy. He is engaging. He is charming. More importantly, he is focused. Some balked at the idea of some stranger from California coming to take the reigns of the theatre, but he has quietly and successfully integrated himself into Up & Coming Weekly, COMMENTS? editor@upandcomingweekly.com.
