Red Bluff had taken a 31-20 lead midway through the third quarter when Tucker Gulliford busted a 93- yard touchdown run up the left side- line. But the Spartans offense sput- tered for most of the second half, producing just 40 yards outside of Gulliford's run. Toombs was knocked out of the game. Toombs had given the Spartans fits, complet- ing 11-of-16 passes for 158 yards and scoring twice with his legs. Odell struggled at first to fill Toombs' shoes, but the Wolves got a break when Bryce Hayden blocked a Red Bluff punt with about 10 minutes remaining in the game. Shasta tailback Avery Holley scored a play later from eight yards out. The Wolves missed their 2- point conversion try, but cut the deficit to 31-26. Red Bluff followed with its best drive of the second half, but it even- tually ended when quarterback Gar- rett Sandow was sacked on consec- utive plays. with five minutes to play, but the Spartans defense forced a three-and- out. Shasta took the lead when Toombs found Josh Rubidoux on a fade route for a 2-point conversion. The lead didn't last long as on and Red Bluff led 21-20. Gulliford ran in the two- point conversion and Red Bluff led 21-14. Shasta then responded with yet another touchdown drive, capped once again by a Toombs touchdown run. Their 2-point conversion failed but the Spartans got the ball back on Shasta's ensuing snap when R.J. Nunez recovered a fumble with two minutes left before halftime. Sandow drove Red Bluff down to the Shasta 7-yard-line, but the Spartans had to settle for a Connor Ross 24-yard field goal and went into halftime leading 24-20. Sandow finished 10-for-24 for 183 yards. Culp had three catches for 55 yards. Houghtby had three catches for 29 yards. Fox, Kyle Case, Jared Poore and Milton each had one reception. Gulliford finished with 11 carries for 144 yards. Milton carried 14 times for 33 yards. Case had six rushes for 13 yards and Mike Stone got one carry that didn't go any- where. Next up for Red Bluff is a trip to Chico to take on the Panthers. The Warriors went into halftime up a touchdown at 21-14 after a scoring barrage by senior wide receiver Nick Feser in the second quarter. He scored on a 75-yard kick return and had two short recep- tions for touchdowns. The Warriors, still up a touchdown, would gain a short field late in the third off an interception by Jose Rosales. Harlow Johnson hooked up with Feser for seven yards, Brenten James gave Mercy a first-and-goal on a five-yard run and it took senior 'back Alejandro Guerrero just two carries to punch in a three-yard touchdown with 2:08 left in the quarter. That's a huge differ- ence." He added, however, that he was proud of his team and that it's back to work on Monday. The Warriors, still with eyes on a first-place league finish, next visit Princeton (2-3 overall, 1-1 league) at 5 p.m. Friday. Corning trailed at half- time 13-2, but rallied back to take a 16-13 lead with under a minute play. Lassen converted a field goal to force overtime. Nathan Fultz completed a monster day on the ground rushing in his third touchdown, but Corning's extra point attempt sailed wide. Lassen then scored and made their kick to earn the victory. Fultz finished with 198 yards on the ground on 20 carries. He also made an interception on defense and provided solid punting throughout the game. Chayce Maday com- pleted 3-of-5 passes all to Colton Peterson for 31 yards. David Edson made eight tackles on defense.
