Box 220 Red Bluff, CA 96080 Charles Rouse is the 2012 Democratic candidate for State Assembly District 3. This newly formed district consists of the six counties in the agriculturally rich Sacramento valley: Tehama, Glenn, Yuba, Sutter and portions of Butte & Colusa. Charles has lived in Corning since 1976 with his wife, Angelica, and their three children. Charles is an Air Force veteran, a retired US postal carrier, and presently farms an olive orchard in Corning and serves as vice-president of the Corning Health Care Association. He is a citizen candidate willing to listen to you when you send him to Sacramento to represent you and your family. He will make intelligent decisions based on your input through town hall meetings and frequent communications. As a farmer and past postal worker he knows the value of hard work in return for a living wage. As a vet- eran he understands that veterans deserve their hard earned benefits and health care. As a farmer he places importance on protecting our north state water rights and agricultural interests. As a gradu- ate of Occidental College he appreciates the importance of higher education and will work to keep our schools well funded. As a retiree he realizes seniors are among the most important seg- ments of our society and will make sure our loved ones are treated with dignity. Most of all he promises to get our economy back on track by putting our unem- ployed heads of household back to work. ed office Charles is supported by Labor, the California Democratic Party, the California Teachers Association, Rep. John Garamen- di, and the mayors of Chico and Corning. He was born in Glendo- ra, California, raised a family in Corning, and worked as a US Postal Service letter carrier and as a member a member of the United Steel Workers Union at Kaiser Steel. He presently serves as a director and VP of a non-profit organization to provide improved and accessible rural healthcare. His main purpose running for the CA Assembly is to help the rural citizen regain their once proud place in the workforce of the six counties he aims to represent. Our economy is currently in a downturn with high unemploy- ment so he will work so families gain a living wage, help create local jobs, and vigorously promote education so our youth remain and work in our communities. He sup- ports state propositions 30 & 37 and opposes propositions 31, 32, 38. Although a newcomer to elect- Charles endorses Governor Jerry Brown's Compromise Tax Measure to help bring California closer to a balanced budget. With- out this fiscal measure he believes California will only go further down the road of eco- nomic despair. He reminds us that the increase in tax will last for only three years and then revert back to today's tax levy. Addi- tionally, he would like the public to know that he is supportive of keep- ing water rights intact for our agricultural commu- nity. He vigorously sup- ports funding of educa- tion so that our students can enjoy a rewarding future; and as a veteran he appreciates their struggle for benefits. Because of these desires Charles hopes to be placed on the agricultural and vet- eran committees if you send him to Sacramento to represent us. Unlike the Republican candi- dates, Charles is free from sub- terfuge and gambits to climb a par- tisan political ladder. To me there is something unseemly about the Herger, LaMalfa, Nielsen, and Logue machinations to control local representation to the U.S. Congress and California Assem- bly and Senate. It is so bad that Dan Logue is running simultane- ously for both the California Assembly seat he presently holds and the California Senate seat Doug LaMalfa resigned half-way thru his term to be Wally Herger's hand-picked heir to his seat in the U.S Con- gress. Richard Mazzucchi Positive Point wonderful man and his candidacy go to www.charlesrouse.org. Isn't it refreshing to have some- one running for office that is free from political baggage that actual- ly lives among and like us? I cer- tainly think so because unlike other candidates you can call him at (530) 824-2321 or visit with him at his Corning home to express your concerns – indeed there is no need to grouse about Charles Rouse. I think it is time for us to rally behind some- one that is honest, hum- ble, and earnest in his desire to serve con- stituents rather than selfishly pursue person- al political aims. No posing as a resident of a Gerber double-wide, receiving ill-gotten per diem or millions in farm subsidies, resigna- tion from elected office and political games- manship, Charles really is "like one of us." To learn more about this Richard Mazzucchi makes his home in Los Molinos. He can be reached at living-green@att.net. It don't get more cute or local than this Commentary have been channeling "Larry the Cable Guy" a lot at the Tehama District Fair. Upon seeing yet another sub-three-foot-tall, cheru- bic-faced, pony-tailed or buzz- haircut-adorned fair attendee, I simply say "Don't matter who you are, that's just cute." If I had to hand out a "Cutest munchkin of the fair" award, it'd be tough but the pink-clothed stroller occupant that repeatedly chirped out "hi" until, upon getting further away, uttered fading little "byes," might get it. County Supervisor George Please excuse my grammar as I Russell's passing surely shocked many; rapid physical demise often does. I was not close to him except that we recognized each other and he always had a smile for me. When word first came to us in the middle of the KBLF morning show, I found myself thinking immediately of a joke; I just as immediately sensed inappropriate disrespect. It was only after Ron Warner stopped by the studio and shared his thoughts about serving as a county supervisor with Mr. Russell that it made any sense. You see, George would often lighten the mood or tension in a meeting with a (marginal) joke, upon which Ron would point his arm and finger and tell him "Go to your room." Only then did I realize that it was per- fectly understandable for this joke to pop into my head: You've surely heard the one about the boy who said that when he died, he wanted to go peacefully in his sleep like his grandfather; not screaming in mor- tal terror like the people riding in his car (cue rimshot). God bless him and comfort those mourning their loss. At last week's special Republi- can Central Committee meeting, I was proud to participate in the meeting's stated purpose: endors- ing a candidate for California State Senate. Our unanimous vote for Jim Nielsen (Dan Logue? No show!) could not have been more rewarding in that I have no doubt, considering the candidates, that Jim is far and away the best man on the ballot. His devotion to the needs, concerns and values of our conservative (and, by definition, sane) part of the state is unques- tioned. Speaking of which, does the nonsensical notion that California does not have an "adverse business climate" pass the logic test for you? Of course it doesn't; yet, we are occasionally treated to some obscure, manipulated analysis to suggest such counterintuitive spin. I simply take the conclusion of the Small Business Roundtable that California has the least friendly business laws, taxes, policies and regulations of any state in Ameri- The need for a state senator that, as he reminded us, is more than just a reliable vote for Republicans in Sacramento, could not be more urgent. Jim Nielsen has the ability to reach out and persuade, to the extent humanly possible, others in the state senate to come to his side on budgetary and policy matters. It's an uphill fight, given the pre- ponderance of liberals from the same urban mega-cities that are responsible for environmental over-regulation, unfunded public employee pension systems, fiscal irresponsibility and antagonism to business. ca. Witness the departure of Com- cast and Campbell's Soup from Sacramento, only to add to their branches in other, less-union-friendly and more-business-friendly states. If our state were so welcoming to "Entre- preneurial Activity," would we have among the highest unemploy- ment rates in the U.S.? I have no problem Presidency has had on gun sales all across America, the presence of the likenesses of Barack and Michelle Obama at the Democra- tic booth brought about the spread of (Mitt) Romney/(Paul) Ryan signs and stickers in numerous other booths and by fair-goers. voting for Dan Logue for the Assembly district that he originally threw his hat into. He stated in several venues, includ- ing another local paper during an interview, that he would not engage in the duplicitous and mis- leading (to tax payers) tactic of running for both the Assembly and State Senate. I'm disappointed that high-level Republicans have given their endorsement to such reprehensible and ethically challenged efforts to manipulate the rules by Mr. Logue. Colusa County Republicans Don Polson The way I see it have similarly chosen to endorse Jim Nielsen; the millions of dollars that Nielsen and Doug LaMalfa are saving taxpayers by not subjecting us to special elections, speaks vol- umes to their integrity and devo- tion to fiscal responsibility. The last thing Tehama County needs is rep- resentation by a Democrat in Sacramento or Washington. At the fair, I felt rewarded to see the groundswell of support for Republicans throughout the Tyler- Jelly commercial building as the days progressed. Not unlike the positive effect that the Obama tinues to peg Obama's support below 50 percent; we Romney/Ryan fans should ignore the anti-Republican media onslaught and take reassurance that the only poll that counts, on November 6, will vindicate our faith. Romney and Ryan will pre- vail in the debates and the vote. I was chagrined to see the Obama cutout that the Democrats chose to display. See if you find it appropriately revealing: There was Barack Obama, behind a lectern, reading from a teleprompter, lean- ing forward, his mouth open, pointing and yelling … absolutely nothing. I had a feeling, when 50 Romney yard signs were handed out at the Corning Olive Festival, that they would be popular; local Republicans snapped up the campaign items at the fair, quickly exceeding my opti- mistic expectations.
