Corndog qualifying Thursday 1B Wednesday, September 26, 2012 – Daily News By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer Dominated by profes- sional eaters its first two years the fair's annual Corndog Eating Contest featured an upset in 2011. Tehama County Social Services worker Tomas Loarca became the first local to nab the $1,000 grand prize when he edged out professional eater Johnnie Excel in the finals. Loarca downed 15 corndogs in the 7-minute final to claim the title of Tehama County's gastral champion. The previous two events had been dominat- ed from professional eaters who had traveled in from out of town to scoop up the prize money. With Loarca's suc- cessful upset bid, hopes are high for another local to rein supreme when the contest begins 5:30 p.m. Thursday with the four-minute prelimi- nary rounds on the Mid- way. The top qualifiers, no more than 12 according to the contest's rules, will then advance to the 7:30 p.m. Saturday $1,000 Finals on the Midway Stage. The final will be an 8- minute event. Those wishing to enter the contest must sign up before 5:15 p.m. at the Tehama District Fair- grounds Office. Contestants must be 18 years-old and there is a $12 registration fee.
