COMMUNITY NEWS COMMUNITY NEWS Art Council Expects Crowds for Festival a STAFF REPORT The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County is anticipating a record attendance for the 34th International Folk Festival, Sept. 28-30. The free event welcomes around 100,000 visitors each year to Festival Park and surrounding areas in Downtown Fayetteville. This year, larger numbers are expected with the addition of a Saturday night concert by national recording artist Aaron Neville. The free performance at 8 p.m. on the main stage in Festival Park is brought by the City of Fayetteville in celebration of the city's 250th anniversary. Opening acts for Neville are well-known local artists Morris Cardenas and Aaron Bellomy. The Arts Council's International Folk Festival kicks off during 4th Friday in Downtown Fayetteville on Sept. 28. Cultural performances will include Hawaiian hula demonstrations and traditional African dances. The Downtown Alliance will distribute 4th Friday International Passports at 222 Hay St. Visitors can "travel" through downtown Fayetteville and collect stamps from restaurants and businesses represented on the passport, and then register to win a grand prize. Passports are also available at the Arts Council at 301 Hay St. from 7 to 9 p.m. during the continuation of the exhibition The Human Figure: Likeness and Presence. The celebration of culture continues on Saturday, Sept. 29, with the Parade of Nations at 10:30 a.m. on Hay St. The pageantry and customs of our diverse community are demonstrated by representatives of more than 30 nations. The parade will be led by members of the Army Ground Forces Band, who will also perform on the main stage in Festival Park on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Festival Park is open from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, with music and dance, international food, arts and crafts vendors and two interactive kids' areas. Throughout the festival, visitors can to learn about other cultures — from Latin and Celtic bands, to Native American and Hispanic foods, to Peruvian and Japanese crafts. "The International Folk Festival fulfi lls one of the Arts Council's main missions — to educate our community through arts and culture," says Deborah Martin Mintz, executive director of the Arts Council. "The stage in Linear Park features teaching artists, such as Gran'daddy Junebug and Surteg Sandhu, who have participated in our year-long Artists in Schools program," Mintz says. After performing on stage, Sandhu will demonstrate turban wrapping and other traditions of India in an interactive workshop space. Children are invited to explore Native-American customs by creating rain sticks in another kids' area near the Native American Cultural Showcase in Festival Park. Department Of Public Health Offers Diabetes Self-Management Program The Cumberland County Department of Public Health is offering a Diabetes Self-Management Education Program to help diabetic patients take control of their health by improving lifestyle habits and reducing the risk of complications caused by the disease. registered nurse, followed by two group sessions covering diabetes education and nutrition. Aberdeen Postmaster's House is Seeking New Members for 2012-2013 The Aberdeen Postmaster's House is seeking new members for 2012-2013. Members meet once a month on the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Postmaster's House. In addition to being a part of an organization dedicated to preserving history in Aberdeen, the organization also offers active members discounts on rental use of the house. Currently, the organization is looking for members who would like to help promote the house for rental use and ideas for continued fundraising to keep rental costs low and the house historically maintained. Membership is $15 for a single person, $25 for a couple. Friends of the Postmaster's House, Inc. is a non-profi t organization 501(c)3 dedicated to the preservation & continued use of the Postmaster's House, an Aberdeen living-history museum. The house is located in historic Aberdeen at 204 South St., and open to the public for rental use for various events at a nominal fee.
