8A Daily News – Saturday, September 22, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith What's the best way to make one's faith known without being objectionable? Rushdy El-Ghussein, former president of the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City: First and foremost, the best way to make one's faith known is to live one's faith, exemplifying its values and meaning in one's behavior and actions. Islam requires this anyway, exhorting believers repeatedly in the Qur'an to believe in and work for right- eousness. Muslims should be honest in all their dealings, generous and forgiving, modest and humble, patient and strong for justice, even against one's self. People in gener- al should not find it objectionable when a person lives true to his or her faith; most people will respect this. After that, the true message of God should be conveyed respectfully, peacefully and kindly. The Qur'an says: "Invite to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in the ways that are best and most gracious" (16:125). Muslims are encouraged to at least present the message of Islam to others so they can know about it. However, if a person does not wish to lis- ten to the message, they should be left alone. "There is no compulsion in religion" (2:256). Lastly, Muslims are called on by their faith to work FAITH LIVES IN ACTIONS toward the good of all. "Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong: they are the ones to attain felicity" (3:104). Muslims should work together with like-minded people for the social good. This is espe- cially applicable in this land of freedom and law, which provides pathways to struggle toward good and against evil. EDUCATION IS KEY other's faith perpetuates prejudice, distrust and fear, and at times can result in violence. Therefore, as religious and cultural diversity grows in a society, it is crucial to share the nuances of one's faith, with regard to its social, cultur- al and philosophical aspects with the people of other faiths. To do this effectively, one should have a clear knowledge of one's own faith and some knowledge of other faiths as well. There are many ways one can promote the understand- ing of one's faith. Some of these are: participating in inter- faith activities at various levels, getting in with a speaker's bureau, offering books about one's faith to libraries, invit- ing people of other faiths to one's place of worship and actively participating in social programs in the communi- ty. Participation in a column like this can also be useful. Regardless of the means one adopts, one should always maintain an attitude of inclusiveness and respect for other faiths, and refrain from anything that would adversely affect religious harmony. The Hindu vision of inclusiveness and respect for all spiritual paths was defined many thousands of years ago by a statement in the Rig-Veda, "Truth is one, sages call it by different names." Therefore, we recognize different religions as the varied expressions of one universal ideal, which is to attain liberation through God realization. There is no fuller revelation of God than the revelation of His Son in earthly life, death and resurrection – for Him and for us – from Manger to Cross to Mountain. I am fortunate enough to recall the date and time of my first meeting with Jesus Christ. When asked, by those who think it an important piece of val- idating information, I can say truthfully, "I first met Jesus in a high school classroom in San Diego, Calif., at 10:22 a.m. on April 20, 1970." I love to add, "But that is not when I was saved. I was saved at about three in the afternoon two thousand years ago, on a hill just outside of Jerusalem." That is the truth – about God and about me. It is rev- elation, and it is a living revela- tion – that which reveals and simultaneously bestows life in terms of itself. to a degree we seldom notice. Every act He performs in Scrip- ture primarily purposes His self revelation – there must be wit- nesses. Jesus always includes the disciples – some or all – when He acts for His Father and Kingdom. Paul makes a point of saying none of this was done in a corner and Jesus rebukes his friends for hid- ing their light under a basket. In the book of Ezekiel alone God tells the prophet more than sixty times that He does and says what He does and says so that "they" will know that He is the sovereign Lord. Even the Creation that unfolds in Genesis is depicted from the point of view of an earthbound observer – this explains the apparently misplaced order of creation that is exactly as Our God is all about revelation it would unfold to such an observ- er. And among Jesus' last earthly words to His disciples in Luke 24 are these: You are witnesses of these things. A witness is a participant observer in terms of the Greek; it is our participation in His life that brings us our life. With that in mind take another look at Luke 24. The story of the walk to Emmaus is smack in the middle of the chapter on Jesus' – and our – resurrection. It begins with two disci- ples on the road to a lit- tle town called Emmaus – a suburb of Jerusalem. When Jesus Himself begins to walk with them they do not recog- nize Him. This is no surprise, inasmuch as they know Him to be dead, but as they talk with the stranger over the seven mile walk they still do not get a clue as to Who is walking with them. Although He opens their minds and hearts to the scriptures con- cerning Messiah in such a way that their hearts burn within them, they do not figure out that the man with Whom they have lived the past three years is beside them now. The truth only dawns on them when the living revelation of God manifests before them in the breaking of the bread of Holy Communion once they reach Emmaus. This is because the Word of God – as authentic and powerful as that Word written must surely be – is still only the record of the mighty life and activity of the Lord Himself. It comes to life only when it is acted James Wilson GodTalk upon by participant observers. When that table of God is erected in the presence of His friends and His enemies things happen – life giv- ing things. Until that moment of commitment there is only the hope of life in the record of Life. On a mission trip to Fiji some years ago I encountered a paralyzed man in a hospital. My faith at the moment was such that I knew that I knew God would not heal the man no matter how fervently I prayed. I knew it in my bones, yet I prayed with an authority I did not feel for the injury process to be reversed in the Name of Jesus. When – ten minutes later – the man rose from his gurney and walked out of the hospital I heard God laughing uproariously as He said, "I don't care what you know or think. care only for what you are willing to do in my Name." It is like the paralyzed man in Mark 2 – healed by Jesus – but unable to access his healing until he rises and risks on the promise Jesus makes in words. Then and only then comes the rev- elation that simultaneously reveals and bestows life in terms of itself. I He is so good – and so commit- ted to our participation in Him we observe.
