This has been one of those weeks for me. Ideas for the column have been a jumbled mess in my brain. Ordinarily I have so many topics to address that they just come tumbling out and plop them- selves on paper. Not so this week, ideas are not organized in my cere- bral system, they may be tumbling out but if they are, they are definite- ly missing the paper. careful when crossing the street and not to talk to strangers or take candy from them. Mom was right when she wanted us to be neat and orderly so that we could find things when we need- ed to find them. What shall I do? Maybe I need a ghost writer. Maybe I need more sleep, food; energy, quiet time or perhaps I need some kind of keep on track elixir? I vaguely remember my Mother telling me that this could happen to me if I kept on being so busy. I must admit that at the time she told me this, I believed it naught. I thought lack of energy and or clear thinking was a mind set and that I could con- trol it. HA, HA, HA! The joke is on me, she was right again. The fact is that I finally discov- ered that my Mother was nearly always right. Mom was right when she insisted that we wash our hands on a regular basis in order to ward off as many germs as possible. Mom was right when she said that we should save some of our money and not spend it all at once. Mom was right when she told us to be ly expressed "right" things to us, she modeled them. She modeled loving us unconditionally even when we didn't listen to her guid- ing words. She modeled living through a life that was not always perfect. She modeled loving us unconditionally even when we did- n't listen to her guiding words. She modeled sacrifice when needed, she modeled loving, not hating. Moth- er's work ethic was strong. No, she was not perfect, she worried too much, and didn't pursue enough of the desires of her heart, like dancing and singing, and playing her accor- dion as much as she would have liked. She sometimes overdid her devotion to her family and neglect- ed nurturing herself. As I write these words, I hear her say; "don't say you can't." A short phrase giving the hearer (me) the courage to keep on keeping on even when the task seemed impos- sible. Her very favorite columnist Mother not only verbal- Carolyn Barber Mom and Erma both had a wealth of wisdom and humor. One of Bombeck's last writings stated that women of age could do the fol- lowing; "Don't bother to look, just put on a purple hat and go out to have fun with the world." Thanks Mom, you just showered words of copy for me in spite of my busyness. Your message from heaven was just what I expected. I love you and yes, you were right, I could do it. Volunteers sought for Tehama District Fair scheduled for Sept. 27-30 The Fair is right around the corner, however, at least one to two more volunteers are needed to ensure the science building and the "Puzzlema- nia" educational kids attraction stays open throughout all hours of fair. Volunteers to be building/exhibit guards are needed for the following shifts: Thursday, 8-10 p.m.; Friday 8-11 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Satur- day 8-11 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 1p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Responsibilities would mainly include supervising the building/exhib- it and keeping an eye on things. The educational exhibit is pretty self sufficient. To volunteer to cover a shift call the Tehama District Fairground at 527-5920. was Erma Bombeck. Mother would have loved the Red Hat group of women who now gather together just for joy. Her favorite color was red and once in a while when I allow myself joy, I wear her red hat. My favorite color is purple so now I can put my red and pur- ple ensemble together and have the wisdom of my Mother on my head if not in it. I can flaunt my red hat and purple clothing as if I were roy- alty.
