4B Daily News – Saturday, September 22, 2012 FEATURES Appreciative husband raises the bar Dear Annie: May I, a male in his 70s, respond to ''Bob,'' who said that aging, obese, snoring and unhealthy women are the reasons for bedroom prob- lems? Perhaps in his home, but not in ours. I can't pin- point exactly when intima- cy began evolving into something deeper, but when I retired, I became so appreciative of this woman who, for more than 30 years, managed our home and family and always ensured that my life was as comfortable as possi- ble. I show my love and thanks by having her coffee ready each morn- ing and performing household labor. I don't mind that her body has added weight (so has mine). I com- pliment her continuing beauty, magnificent heart and kindness to others. — Kathy's Grateful Hus- band We were overwhelmed with mail from men and women, agreeing and disagreeing with Bob. Read on for a tiny sample: From Kentucky: ''Bob'' is right. Men don't look at obese women walking by. But you won't see a woman taking a second look at an obese man, either. The major- ity of obese people have chosen that course by eating too much. Name Withheld: When I was 58, my wife decided that I should get my testosterone checked. I did — and happened to mention that my wife had put on an extra 50 pounds. Boy, did I get an earful on Dear Grateful: Bless your heart. NEW YORK (AP) — The market took a recess Friday from the Fed rally. Stocks have been push- ing higher for weeks, not because investors think the economy is healed but because of expectations, then confirmation, that the Federal Reserve would step in and try to fix it. Annie's Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar the way home. Women are wired differently. They equate sex with love. Most men feel that sex is a physi- cal thing. All this, and I still love my wife very much. Florida: Women of America, please ignore this pathetic loser. This jerk is an embarrassment to all decent men. Plenty of men have laughable beer bellies and think watching golf and NASCAR is exercise. Greencastle, Pa.: I'm female and am repulsed by obese women. Recently, I watched a large friend eating ice cream. She doesn't understand why she can't get a man interested in her. Boston: Bob left out the most important part. In the darkness of one's bedroom, one can be in bed with a fantasy. But no amount of testosterone will make it any easier to kiss the lips that have been yelling at you all day long. California: I'm a 52-year-old man, married for 31 years. I enjoy talking to my wife on the phone, but lose my libido as soon as I see her. Men are visually stimulated. I have even searched dating sites looking for sex. Bob is correct: The women on the dating sites are single because they are fat. Ohio: A man marries a woman for two reasons: She knows how to treat a man and looks fine, and she is kind and courteous and knows her place. Tannersville, Pa.: I always get a kick out of the ED commercials in which the woman is slim and attrac- tive. Why don't they show the real slob the man goes home to after working all day? They should be marketing blindfolds, not drugs. Louisiana: I was married to a morbidly obese man and found his body revolting. He was a wonderful lover, but we had sex in the dark, and I tried not to look at him below the neck. Massachusetts: Women haven't cornered the market on laziness and obesity. It just seems that women are more likely to overlook these faults than men. So when your wife wants sex, just shut your eyes and imagine someone hot. She's been doing that for years. From a Nurse: According to Kaiser State Health Facts, 71.2 per- cent of adult men in the country are overweight or obese compared to 57 percent of adult women. People are more likely to become over- weight if the environment they live in is conducive to unhealthy eating and inactivity. Married people tend to live in the same environment. Each partner should be willing to help and support the other to reach healthy goals and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Stocks slip in late trading, after long Fed rally Wall Street Poor's 500 fell in the final minutes of trading, closing down a minuscule 0.11 point, or 0.01 percent, to 1,460.15. like another day in the Fed rally, which began in earnest early this month, until stocks slipped in the late afternoon. The Dow Jones industrial average rose as much as 50 points before falling into the red in the last half-hour of trading. It's just the fourth day in September that the Dow hasn't man- aged a gain. Most of Friday seemed Still, the declines were small. The Dow lost 17.46 points, or 0.1 percent, to 13,579.47. The summer rally is mostly the result of vows by the Feder- al Reserve and other central banks, like the Bank of Japan and the European Central Bank, to do more to try to help. Despite the Friday blip, stocks are still much higher than might be expected for such a morose economy. This month, the Dow and the S&P started trading at levels not seen since December 2007, nine months before the fall of Lehman Brothers invest- ment bank. Since the start of June, the Dow has popped nearly 1,200 points. But the stock market's party mode doesn't mean the underlying economy is But the promises are also an unsettling reminder: The central banks think the economy is so bad that it can't bounce back on its own. ''It's just a big illusion,'' said Bob Phillips, managing partner at Spectrum Man- agement Group in Indi- anapolis. The economy, he said, is still a ''no man's land'' plagued by high unemployment and slow growth. The signs were obvious Friday: The Labor Depart- ment reported that the unemployment rate rose in 26 states last month. The Warm, wet compress to treat most boils TOR K: I have a painful boil on my thigh. Can I treat it at home? DEAR READ- DEAR DOC- ER: Yes, you can, unless it's an unusually large boil (called a car- buncle). Boils and carbuncles are skin infec- tions that form pus- filled pockets in the skin. Pus is a fluid that contains bacteria, dead skin cells and infection- fighting white blood cells. Dr. K by Anthony L. Komaroff, M.D. antibiotics have been around for only 70 years. Usually, you won't need antibiotics; your immune system will cure the infection that caused the boil. After all, people have been having boils since human beings first appeared on Earth, and A boil begins as a painful infection of a single hair follicle. It is a red, swollen, painful bump under the skin. As the infection worsens, a boil can grow larger. A whitish top (a "white- head") can appear at the center of the boil. When that top bursts, the pus will drain out of the boil. cle, a large boil or a boil that doesn't improve after a week of warm compress treatments, call your doctor. Your doctor will drain the infected area through a small incision. This relieves pain, speeds recovery and limits scar formation. You may need to take antibiotics for a carbuncle. If you have a carbun- World Trade Organization cut its estimates for growth in global trade for this year and next. In Europe, Spain was reportedly close to asking for a bailout from Europe. The finance minister of Germany, which has paid for much of the previous bailouts, shot back that Spain doesn't need it. It's all a reminder that there's only so much the Fed can do. It can't fix the fiscal cliff facing the U.S. government, the higher taxes and government spending cuts that take effect next year unless Con- gress acts. Others worry that the Fed has used up all the tricks that have previously fueled the stock market. Phillips said he's worried about ''a nasty correction at the first hint of any less- than-stellar news.'' Boils commonly occur on the buttocks, face, neck, armpits and groin. However, any- where you have hair, you can get a boil. A carbuncle is a clus- ter of interconnected boils. It is a deeper skin infection that involves a group of infected hair follicles in one area. Carbuncles often are found on the back of the neck, shoulders, hips and thighs. Boil and carbuncles can also cause fever and a general feeling of ill- ness. If you have a fever with a boil, I recom- mend that you call your doctor. Fevers are unusual with a boil and indicate that the infec- tion may be more seri- ous. Small boils often drain within five to seven days. You can help this process along by applying a warm, wet washcloth for 20 to 30 minutes, three or four times a day. Once the boil drains, cover it with a clean bandage. Wash the area daily with antibacterial soap to contain the infection. If the infection is deep, your doctor may fill the drained pocket with sterile gauze. The gauze can keep the inci- sion open, allowing pus to continue to drain. Now and then a boil or a carbuncle leads to a spreading skin infection called cellulitis. If you see the skin around a boil or carbuncle begin to get red and tender, and that red area starts growing, contact your doctor. Cel- lulitis usually requires antibiotic treatment. If you have an area of skin that is prone to boils or carbuncles: — Keep the area clean and dry. — Avoid wearing tight clothing. — Wash daily with antibacterial soap. — Use warm com- presses at the earliest sign of irritation. — Avoid shaving in that area.
