OregOn AlphA COntInues A trAdItIOn OF exCellenCe ACADEMIC SUCCESS PARAMOUNT FOCUS FOR OREGON ALPHA What rang true in 1918 is still true today. Our first initiate, and for more than 30 years our chapter mentor, Dr. Dubach, simply and eloquently stated there are but two attributes we must look for in young men: "character and brains." Recruit the right men and provide a living environment that makes it easy to do right. Oregon Alpha has led all fraternities with the highest annual average GPA for most of its existence. For the past 10 years, the chapter has outpaced the all-university, all-men, and all-fraternity GPAs by significant margins. Oregon Alpha, All-University, and All-IFC GPAs J oining Sigma Phi Epsilon in 1918, Ulysses Grant Dubach had al- ready started to make his mark on the Fraternity. As Dean of Men at Oregon State College, Dr. Dubach advised the soon-to-be Ore- gon Alpha Chapter. Our chapter and many others have achieved suc- cess by following the simple outline le by Dr. Dubach. According to Dr. Dubach, Sigma Phi Epsilon will provide four things to its members: • A home-away-from-home • A moral atmosphere • An intellectual atmosphere • A true brotherhood Learning is important to each and every member, not just the new ones. And the need to learn never ends. All of us can improve. All of us sometimes get sloppy or forget. We all need to refresh our memories, sharpen our skills, and keep learning more. Aer being inducted, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon must live right, every day. We must be mindful of our cardinal principles—Virtue, Dil- igence and Brotherly Love—and practice those in our daily lives. We must also pursue the Balanced Man Ideal, developing a Sound Mind in a Sound Body. We want every member to become an excellent servant leader. As U.G. Dubach emphasized, if you have it in your heart to make SigEp great, it will be great. Choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong. Ulysses Grant Dubach '18 was Dean of Men at Oregon State University and "Mr. Scholarship" for Sigma Phi Epsilon for several decades. He traveled to countless chapters and district meetings to reinforce that "character and brains" were the two main qualities a SigEp needed. 2 OREGON ALPHA CONTINUES NATIONAL AND LOCAL ACHIEVEMENT National Fraternity Awards • Won 23 Buchanan Cups (more than any other SigEp chapter in the nation) • 6 consecutive Buchanan Outstanding Chapter Awards • Recognized for a decade of continued excellence Oregon State Recognition • William Jasper Kerr Cup for Outstanding IFC Chapter—received each of last 8 years (more than any other chapter on campus) • Oregon Alpha has won the Scholarship Cup for the highest fraternity GPA over 70 times since the chapter was founded in 1918
