8A Daily News – Saturday, September 15, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Should religion play a part in our government? Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery: In general, religion should play no role in government. We've seen the monumental problems that can occur when a theocracy rules. Our forefathers wise- ly included what is known as the establishment clause in the Constitution to ensure the separation of church and state. REMAIN SEPARATE What God calls is better than what we call Freedom to practice one's religion is essential in a democracy. Today we are a pluralistic nation practicing a wide variety of religions. But at the core of all of these are ethical and moral principles, such as honoring life (abstain from killing), honoring another's property (abstain from stealing), honoring the truth (abstain from lying) and using sexuality carefully so as not to harm others. Buddhism adds a fifth ethical principle — abstaining from intoxicants or drugs that cloud the mind. We can easily see how these common ethical principles, when not followed have the potential to cause great harm to others or ourselves. It is easy to see why no single religion should have a role in government; however; these common ethical and moral principles may then be used as a framework for the basis of government. Because they are common to all religions, they may be applied to government without the adherence to only one religion. In addition, the adoption of these principles will alleviate much suf- fering in our society. GOD WATCHES OVER US Pastor Emeritus Raymond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ: Religion is not ordained by God to be a political value system as he has ordained systems of government. Our democratic government is politically sacred mainly for two reasons: First, it champions a distinct separation from religion with the political rule of the separation of church and state. Second, democracy is invested in the freedoms of the people. So, essentially, in our democratic form of government there is a basic consensus of separation of these two value systems. But religion is not totally adrift from our form of government. It plays a significant part _ not within the actual political workings of the system, but in a strong and revered sense of God because it seems obvious that the founding fathers of this nation viewed America as a blessed nation. We have and live with the confidence and assurance that God watches over us. America expresses this divine providence in word pledges, prayer and particu- larly in song. Consider: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God ..." Words of the song, "God bless America — land that I love." And who can stir our emotions and our sense of God and country more than Ray Charles when he sings "America, the Beautiful": "America, America, God shed his grace on thee ..." In the tenth century BC – during the reign of King Solomon – the region of Galilee in Israel was des- ignated a dirty place, a wasted place. It all stemmed from the gift of King Solomon to King Hiram (of Tyre) of twenty cities in the region to pay off a debt. Hiram was not pleased with his payment and named the whole region Kavul or Cabul; it refers literally to a swampy place, a repository of rot- ting plant matter. Why all the minu- tia? Because words have conse- quences and this name was still in force at least through the time of Jesus on earth. That is why Nathanael, one of His first prospec- tive disciples wondered out loud if anything good (Jesus came from Nazareth) could emerge from a place like Galilee. When Jewish colonists began re- settling the Galil around 1880 they found nothing but malarial swamps there. Many died from disease while others tried to figure out how to drain the swamps and grow crops that would pay. In the meantime they turned more and more to their God – we call that process repen- tance – and they began to remember that God had called that land a place of milk and honey. As the process of repentance continued over the decades leading to Israeli indepen- dence the consequences were both spiritual and pragmatic. (And let's remember that not every Israeli practices the faith of his fathers; only a critical mass is required.) The colonists began to think more in terms of milk and honey and less in terms of kavul. They imported eucalyptus trees to help drain the swamps and used other innovative means that are the fruit of vision – I call it divine intervention – to make Galilee what it is today – the heart of Israeli agriculture, the garden spot of the nation, and the chief source of foreign exchange curren- cy for the past eighty years. One might say that what God – in His far seeing – calls a thing is more accurate and cer- tainly more valuable than what we – in our short sightedness – call it. One might also note that this repentance thing is a lot more about Whom we are turning toward than about what we are turn- ing from. It is certainly more about seeking des- tiny than about mourning dysfunction. James The same process is going on in our own city of Redding, California. In the late 19th Century the com- munity we call Redding – through a misspelling of an early inhabitant's name – was first known as Poverty Flats. It was the only place in the region where no gold could be found and the first settlers were dis- gusted enough to grunt out a name as negative as Cabul ever thought to be. When the courts decided the spotted owl – an non-native threat- ened species – was more important than the local economy it destroyed our principle source of jobs in the timber industry and it looked like Poverty Flats was an apt name for an economic swampland. But peo- ple of prayer discerned God's name for Redding – Abundant Springs – and it turned out the city sits above one of the largest aquifers in the world. They began praying for the community under its authentic name and business people began to band together and use the creativity only God can give – alongside the dedication and effort only we can supply. A prayer effort that began in Redding witnessed the breaking AWANA Clubs at First Church of God, on the corner of South Jackson Street and Luther Road, start Wednesday, Sept. 26. AWANAat First Church of God The clubs meet 6:15-8 p.m. each Wednesday. The clubs are for all kids in the community ages 3 years through 6th grade. For more information, call 527-5717. Wilson GodTalk of drought in 2010 at about the same time hotel owners acted to fulfill a prophetic revelation about coopera- tive action along Hilltop Drive beginning to break the economic drought in the city. New industries and employers are coming into the city and the tim- ber industry is at or near the same sales levels it enjoyed in the 1990s – although there are many more people in the city looking for work than lived here then. A local church established a hold- ing company that leased the failing convention center so that a Redding landmark has once again become prosperous and the small Christ- ian liberal arts university is becoming one of the top teacher prep schools in the state while preparing itself to be a major uni- versity power. Most encouraging is that Redding was recently des- ignated one of the ten most gener- ous cities in the USA. Poverty Flats? We live in and through an Abundant Springs mindset and the rest of the fulfillment of our name is on the way, just as it was in Israel's Galilee. This is the fruit of a culture of repentance – turning toward the source of our identity instead of looking back on our self-generated identity of dysfunction. God just knows us better than we know our- selves. Jim Wilson is a director for the first National Day of Repentance of the 21st Century.
