H appy birthday to California Gamma! Our chapter has hit a huge milestone as we celebrate turning 100 on July 27, 2017! We have come a long way in 100 years and we can't forget all the women who have contributed to where California Gamma is today! On that date, a local sorority called Entre Nous, which was originally founded in 1895, became the California Gamma Chapter of Pi Beta Phi. The installation was conducted by Pi Beta Phi Grand President May L. Keller, assisted by Grand Vice President Nina Harris Allen, Grand Secretary Julia E. Rogers, and Historian Daisy Davis Carney. What a wonderful occasion that must have been! It's hard to imagine that in 1917 when our chapter was founded, women didn't have the right to vote, the United States declared war on Germany in World War I, and the Rose Bowl was played for only the third time. For all of us who are fortunate to be sisters in the wine and blue, the colonizing of our chapter has changed thousands of women's lives. Over the years, our chapter houses have been places we have called home, made lifetime memories and friendships, and met our husbands. Each time I walk through the doors of our chapter house, I recall so many happy occasions and recollections of my sisters. Those memories will last a lifetime. I am so grateful to the 12 founders of I.C. Sorosis. As a wide-eyed college student, I was in awe of our amazing founders and how they were trailblazers to create the first fraternity for women 150 years ago at Monmouth College. I think of the hurdles and roadblocks that they must have endured along the way. I am quite sure that today's Pi Beta Phi would make our founders proud with over 200 chapters and over 250,000 members. It's amazing how a group of 12 collegians had the vision, dedication, and fortitude to organize our Pi Beta Phi and pass the torch to others for many years to come! In this issue, you can share in the fun our collegians had on Founders' Day as they celebrated 150 years of Pi Phi sisterhood. We will also celebrate our chapter's 100th birthday on Friday, June 16, and Saturday, June 17, with a sleepover and other events at the chapter house. You don't need to spend the night to be a part of the fun! If you are interested in attending, register on EventBrite by Wednesday, June 14. More information is on page 4. And if you'd like to assist with the event, please let me know. We need volunteers to make this happen!
