By JOSEPHSHUFELBERGER MediaNews Group OROVILLE — Progress can't Last year, the Las Plumas High football team fell to Corning 52-0 in the season opener. On Friday night, the Thunder- birds fell once again, but this time the Cardinals had to work for a 35- 12 victory at Harrison Stadium. There was no running clock this time around, no emptying the benches and letting everyone play. Las Plumas gave the Cardinals nearly all they could handle. Corning needed two touchdowns in the fourth quarter after Las Plumas scored on Eddie Romero's 1-yard touchdown run to end the third period, trimming the Cardinals' advantage to 21-12. "LP is a better team than they've been," Corning quarterback Chayce Maday said. Corning's last score came after Las Plumas couldn't convert a fourth down in its own territory, giving the Cardinals a short field with 7:02 left. "We're definitely ahead of where we've been," first-year coach Dave Morris said of his Thunderbirds. "We still have a long ways to go." The Cardinals finally broke away from LP on their only completed pass of the night, and it was a big one. A 36-yarder from Maday to Nathan Fultz came on fourth down and went for a touchdown, putting Corning ahead 28-12 with 8:02 left in the game. umn after an 0-10 mark in 2011. "We're making a lot of progress," said Matheson, who racked up 140 yards on five catches. "We have more role players, more key players. The whole team is together." Matheson, a 5-foot-11, 165- pound senior, flashed big-play abili- ty as he set up both of LP's scores. Early in the second quarter, he turned a short pass into a 50-yard gain with a stiff-arm to get away from one defender and made a cut- back to get to the Corning 13-yard line. Three plays later, Romero broke in from the 1, getting the T'birds within 7-6 of Corning with 9:31 before halftime. The Cardinals opened the scoring on a 23-yard TD run from Fultz on the first play of the second quarter after the two teams finished the first scoreless. A 2-yard TD run from Maday put Corning ahead 14-6 midway through the second quarter. LP appeared to be on the verge of cutting the into lead again at the end of the second period, driving to the Cardinals' 25. But an option pitch was fumbled, and Corning recov- ered at its own 35 with 2:17 left before halftime. The Cardinals took advantage and got their third TD of the quarter on David Edson's 6-yard run with 33 seconds remaining in the second quarter to give Corning a 21-6 lead at halftime. The Cardinals, as usual with their wing-T offense, leaned on the ground game all night. Colton Conoly ran for 147 yards on 14 car- ries, and Fultz ran for 142 more on 17 rushes. But Romero's score, his second TD after a 2-yarder in the second quarter, along with the play-making of senior wideout Brendon Mathe- son and a bend-but-don't-break defense showed that LP has serious designs on getting into the win col- The LP defense helped keep the hosts in the game with two critical fourth-down stops. The first came on the opening drive of the game. On third down-and-goal from the LP 2-yard line, Maday was stuffed for a 9-yard loss. Corning went for it on fourth down, but Travis Ramage sacked Maday, giving his team the ball. Conoly for a 1-yard loss. "That's our defense: bend and not break," Morris said. On the Cardinals' first drive of the second half, LP again delivered deep in its own zone. On fourth-and-short from the LP 5, the Thunderbirds busted through and swarmed son was at it again. He ran down the left sideline and quarterback Jess Little threw the ball up, giving Math- eson, who had single coverage, a chance to make a play. Matheson did, outjumping the Corning defender and coming down with the ball at the 1-yard line for a 34-yard reception. Brandon Crawford beat out a single to short leading off the final inning and moved to second when Brett Pill dropped his first career sacrifice bunt. Angel Pagan grounded out to first to advance Crawford to third. Scutaro sent the final fastball from Bryan Shaw (1-5) past diving third baseman Chris Johnson for San Fran- cisco's seventh walk-off win. Scutaro also doubled and scored the tying run in the ninth to help hand J.J. Putz his second straight blown save. The Giants, coming off a 5-1 road trip against Chicago and Houston, returned home with a 4 1/2-game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West. The loss gave Arizona, now 10 1/2 back of San Francisco, another blow to its fading playoff hopes. Scutaro hit a double to left leading The Giants handed starter Barry Zito plenty of support in the first inning. On a relatively warm, windless day by San Francisco standards, Posey's fly carried over the head of right fielder Justin Upton and off the score- board for a double that scored Scu- taro.
