Sigma Phi EPSilon PAGE 2 Join Us in Manhattan next spring, Celebrate 100 Years of Kansas beta in 2018 T he very first Kansas Beta initiate was John R. MacAurther, who was followed by 17 others. In 1915, the Chapter began as a club, and then morphed into a local Fraternity known as Epsilon Epsilon Epsilon, but even then the men knew they wanted to be part of a national Fraternity. The ideals and principles of Sigma Phi Epsilon appealed strongly to them, so they petitioned for a charter. On February 23, 1918, Kansas Beta became the 56th Chapter. Thus began a legacy of brotherhood, learning, achievement, and lifelong friendships among those who have been fortunate enough to become members. Where has the time gone? Next year, our Chapter will celebrate its 100th anniversary! I'm not sure our founding fathers could have foreseen the legacy their vision and efforts have yielded, but hopefully they would be proud of the many men who can trace their character, development, and success to what they learned as a member of Kansas Beta. We will be celebrating this momentous occasion in Manhattan next year on Saturday, February 24, 2018. While we are still working on the format and schedule of events, we have reserved a special rate block of hotel rooms and a ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manhattan. The contact information for this property is: Hilton Garden Inn 410 S. Third Street Manhattan, KS 66502 (785) 532-9116 www.hilton.com/Garden_Inn/Manhattan There will be complete details in the fall issue of The Hoop of Steel, but now is the time to reach out to your brothers and begin planning to attend. For many, it's been too long since you've had a chance to come back to Manhattan, or reconnect with your brothers. The current Chapter members are eagerly looking forward to this event, knowing it will be their chance to meet many of those that paved the way for their Kansas Beta experience. As much as things have changed in the world in the last 100 years, the men who make up the Chapter today share the same appreciation you did to be surrounded by brothers, share developmental experiences, and prepare for life after college. Several men participate in the annual Polar Plunge event this year, held at Bill Synder Family Stadium. Sigma Phi Epsilon raised more than $1,800 for the event. Kansas Beta volunteers for the Body First School Fitness Challenge. Members set up events, passed medals out, and organized groups of runners. Brothers Adam Pelfrey '17 and Luke Henes '18 take home intramural championships in their respective weight classes.
