The WISE OLD OWL Epsilon Kappa ChaptEr of sigma Chi fratErnity at thE UnivErsity of mEmphis Spring 2017 FEATURES: Undergraduates Shatter Fundraising Expectations - 2 • Remarkable Success - 3 • Alumni News - 4 PRESERVING THE BLUE AND GOLD Alumni Chapter to Be Formed in Memphis (Continued on page 4) B rothers, how many of you can relate to this? Think back to when you were an active member. It's 2 p.m. and you decide to swing by the Chapter House after class. You have to be at work at 4 p.m. You see an open spot in the back, so you park and go inside to see your brothers for a while. Over time, it seems as if 15 other brothers show up to the Chapter House. You sit around, watch some TV, and talk about class and the Tigers. Time passes and it's now 3:30 p.m. You walk outside, and all 15 of those brothers who showed up somehow managed to block your car in. You look at your watch and realize that time is running out and you don't want to be late for work. You run inside and hunt down every brother who is parked behind you and ask them to move their cars. This takes another 15 minutes. You are finally able to pull out of the driveway at 3:45 p.m. You rush to work, but it's no use. You finally walk in at 4:15 p.m. and you can see that look on your boss' face. If only there was a better parking situation at the house… It is now 2017 and much has been done to the Chapter House over the past year. It took some work and there were some obstacles, but with the help of some hardworking brothers, the Chapter House finally has the parking we all longed for as actives. To be more specific, a new wraparound driveway. This project began with acquiring the property next door. We were able to purchase the lot from the Sigma Chi Foundation. From there, time was spent clearing the lot of trees, taking out the stumps, and leveling the land. Afterward, the curb was cut and the fence was taken down to show the new property line. The new driveway was then put in and the fence was rebuilt. The driveway itself wraps around from one side of the house to the other. It also added several new parking spots. Brothers will be able to enjoy this new luxury for generations to come. This could not have been done if it were not for Bunky Wingfield '68 and Mike Richmond '68. They devoted much of their personal time and energy to this project. The Epsilon Kappa Chapter thanks you. In Hoc, Neil Carrigan '07 njcarrigan@yahoo.com G reetings and Happy New Year from the Memphis Sigma Chi Housing Corporation. Our annual meeting was held on Saturday, January 28. This year's meeting was particularly eventful because Jack Sammons, Iota Iota '74, was given the Significant Sig Award. The award was presented by Ashley Woods, Zeta Omega '00, the CEO of the Sigma Chi Foundation, who also served as the featured speaker. Ashley provided words of encouragement for active brothers and updated those in attendance concerning the leadership programs being offered by Sigma Chi. New Wraparound Driveway Installed at 3582 Mynders Ave. Brothers with members of Special Olympics Greater Memphis. Board of Directors Welcomes New Members We also elected our Board of Directors, and I am proud to say that all of our previous board members were re-elected. Those include Michael Weigert '89, Kurt Voldeng '89, Mike Richmond '68, Danny Knight '99, John Hanna '08, Gray Bowles '06, Bunky Wingfield '68, Neil Carrigan '07, Charles Pierce '06, Don Wilson '68, and me. Additionally, we added two new members, Tom Cassidy '94 and Wyatt Cole '14. We look forward to Tom and Wyatt contributing to our board with their talents and efforts. Join the Mid-South Alumni Chapter Today Lastly, an announcement was made at the meeting concerning a very important issue—forming an official alumni Chapter. Although we have held numerous alumni events over the last several years, we have not had an alumni Chapter that is officially recognized by our International Headquarters. A Sigma Chi alumnus from the University of Montana, Tim Ondrak, Beta Delta '05, is a recent transplant to Memphis. Tim has graciously offered to work with the folks at our International Headquarters to form an alumni association for all local alumni, irrespective of their home Chapter. Tim will need some help in getting the alumni Chapter off the ground, and he intends to form a committee of local Sigs to assist in planning activities and recruiting participants.
