3 SIGMA CHI Brothers End 2016 with Remarkable Success Determined to Continue Tradition of Excellence T he past year was one for the books for Epsilon Kappa. We saw incredible growth and continued success across the board. From staying atop the Greek community in academics to swelling membership numbers and a historic year for our philanthropic efforts, brothers outperformed themselves. We are ecstatic about our efforts and results in 2016, but we are even more excited for our future successes in 2017. Undergraduates Earn Highest Fraternity GPA Academics continue to be a forethought of the Chapter's mind. The Chapter had the highest IFC GPA in the spring and fall of 2016. Our new initiates, the brothers of the Epsilon Alpha pledge class, had the highest new member GPA on campus. These are trends that we hope to continue the next several years, just as we have done in the past. The Chapter also won the 2016 Pillar of Excellence for Academic Support and the Legion of Honor Award for Scholastic Performance. We are not taking learning for granted today or tomorrow. Membership Reaches 80 Brothers Epsilon Kappa's membership has been growing consistently and this past spring we reached 83 active brothers. After December graduation, we sit right at 80 brothers. The newly initiated Epsilon Kappa class (27 brothers strong) is Sigma Chi through and through. They are eager to grow in the Chapter and begin to be leaders of men. They have truly provided yet another youthful spark to the Chapter to keep it in the upward direction. We are looking forward to another great recruitment with new Recruitment Chairman Spencer Smith '19 at the helm. Continuing Campus Involvement Our brothers are continuing to do great things in and out of the Fraternity. Our very own Robert Allen '17 was selected as Mr. University of Memphis. We have several brothers who are holding important leadership positions on campus as well, including Eli Willard '17 as IFC president. This is the second year in a row that Epsilon Kappa has produced an IFC president. We continue to be involved with the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital fundraising organization Up 'til Dawn with two of our own serving as morale captains. We will also be welcoming the next freshman class of Tigers onto campus with three Frosh Camp counselors and two orientation guides. Sigma Chis remain the leaders on campus. Nearly $50,000 Raised for Various Philanthropies Without reservation, I am able to say Epsilon Kappa knocked philanthropy out of the park in 2016. Here are some numbers to consider: $1,500 raised for Special Olympics Greater Memphis Polar Bear Plunge in February; $18,000 raised for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through Up 'til Dawn in March; and nearly $28,000 raised for Special Olympics Greater Memphis through a revamped Derby Days in the fall. A total of $48,500 with smaller fundraising efforts brought us close to $50,000 raised for multiple philanthropies in 2016. Thank You, Alumni I would like to reflect one more time on the outstanding year Epsilon Kappa had in 2016. Across the board, we worked hard and succeeded in true Sigma Chi fashion. These kind of fantastic results take an unparalleled alumni base such as this one. Alumni have given us so much from monetary donations, direction and guidance, to simply your presence and letting us know that you all are here for us. We cannot thank you all enough. We are looking forward to a great year with continued Blue and Gold success. Planning Underway for 2017 Derby Days Derby Days at Epsilon Kappa Chapter was a huge success in 2016—shattering records and expectations throughout the Chapter and campus. Our partnership with Special Olympics Greater Memphis continues to strengthen, and many of our brothers participated in the Polar Bear Plunge event on February 4. Planning for Derby Days 2017 has already begun, and we are eager to build on the amazing momentum that we built over the past year. Spencer Smith '19 during Sign-A-Sig for Derby Days in October 2016.
