ByChipThompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter RED BLUFF TheRedBluffLady Spartans softball team gave up a pair of runs each in the first and second innings and couldn't generate enough of- fense to close the gap, falling 5-2 at home to the Chico Pan- thers. After giving up 2 in the first, Allyson Drury led off and reached second on an error, but was followed by a strikeout, pop fly and ground out to third to end the inning. Down 4-0 in the second with one away, Alexis Zamora walked and stole second and Elizabeth Baccala singled to give the Spartans a strong chance, but they couldn't capitalize. Aubrey Zamora doubled with one out in the third and reached third on an infield ground out by Aubree Akins but was stranded by a strikeout. The Spartans had a quiet fourth, except for an infield sin- gle from Alexis Zamora, who advanced to second on a field- er's choice, but a ground out to short ended the threat. Drury doubled with one out in the fifth, but a pair of pop ups to right left her stranded. The Panthers tacked on an in- surance run in the sixth and the Spartansfinallygotontheboard. Kylee Kitchell reached on an er- ror to start the inning, stoles sec- ond and advanced to third on a single from McKenzie Colgate. Kitchell came home when Drury hit into a fielder's choice. In the final frame, the Spar- tans rallied with a single from Braydi Johnson, who reached second on a wild throw. A dou- ble off the bat of Drury scored Johnson and Drury advanced to third on a ground up. But a short ground out and a strike out would end the momentum and the game. Drury led the Spartans with 2 hits, one a double, an RBI and a run; Aubrey Zamora had a double and Colgate had a sin- gle. Bacala had an RBI and a run. The Spartans (15-9 overall, 1-2 league) will travel to Palo Cedro Thursday for a 4 p.m. game with the Foothill Cou- gars (22-2-1 overall, 3-0 league). SOFTBALL LADY SPARTANS CAN'T OVERCOME EARLY DEFICIT CHIPTHOMPSON—DAILYNEWS Red Bluff's Braydi Johnson tags out a Chico runner at second Tuesday a ernoon. By Daniel Brown Bay Area News Group ALAMEDA Mark Davis finally has the stadium deal long sought, but he spoke mostly of frustration and sadness Tues- day in his first interview since the NFL approved the Raiders' move to Las Vegas. "I'm not celebrating anything like I would like to be," Davis said on the Raiders flagship ra- dio station, 95.7 The Game. "We are going to be building a world-class stadium in the en- tertainment capitol of the world. It's going to be great for Super Bowls and everything else. "But I still have a feeling for the fans in the Bay Area. And I've met with a number of them. And anything I say to them isn't going to soothe them, and it makes this whole thing bitter- sweet." In a 24-minute conversation with host J.T. The Brick, the Raiders owner recounted the tortured history of negotiations in trying to keep the NFL fran- chise in Oakland. Davis sounded most rue- ful over not being able to find a viable solution at the current site of the Oakland Coliseum. He envisioned a way in which that venue would be demolished and reborn with a baseball-only venue for the A's and a football- only venue for the Raiders. Davis told 95.7 The Game they were so interested in that sce- nario that they approached the A's a few years ago in search of a partnership. He recalled a lunch with himself, Raiders team pres- ident Marc Badain, A's then- managing partner Lew Wolff and A's then-president Mike Crowley at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley. "We offered them the oppor- tunity to purchase 20 percent of the Raiders and to do what I said about building two sta- diums on that site," Davis said. "And the message from them was … that they did not want to remain on that site, especially if we were to build there. But they would love to buy 20 percent of the Raiders. And that was really the last time we talked to the A's about it." Davis said the Raiders con- tinued to pursue other options at that location with the City of Oakland, but those talks never hinted at the kind of "world class" stadium plan he envi- sioned. "I do believe it's a phenome- nal site," Davis said. "I've said it all along. The site in Oakland is phenomenal. And Sundays at that stadium are the greatest. And the plans that the city (pro- posed) I think it would com- promise that game day experi- ence." NFL Davis says he did everything he could to keep team in Oakland Staff report RED BLUFF The Red Bluff Spar- tans boys' tennis team beat the Foothill Cougars Tuesday after- noon 6-1, winning all but one sin- gles match. The lone loss for the Spartans was in the No. 1 singles match, which Adam Swarthout dropped 6-0, 6-0 to Kaison Lum. TENNIS Spartans beat Foothill 6-1 at home OAKLAND A man dressed in all black and orange stood out Monday like a prostitute in church. It was green and gold everywhere in the plaza between the Coliseum and Oracle, which has been converted into a private party with food trucks and games. But here was a fan decked out in Giants gear. And Keita Jones, a 36-year- old Oaklander, couldn't let that fly. He yelled for the Giants fan to leave. He brazenly asked why he wasn't watching the Gi- ants game on TV. He told the in- truder to go back across the Bay where they "love Buster Posey because he's so cute." "I have to let 'em know where they are," said Jones, headed to section 149 of the bleachers. "If I see you in a Giants hat, a Red Sox hat, a Yankees hat, get ready to get roasted. Oakland is more than a place on the map. It's a lifestyle. We're a city of perse- verance. For so long, we were treated as the red-headed step- child, and we embraced it. Now Oakland is trendy." There was a distinctive feel at the A's season kick off. The buzz of a happening scene. An aura of self-realization galvanizing a fan base. It was Opening Night, so the novelty of the 2017 season boosted the atmosphere. The unique A's vibe was in overdrive. By Chip Thompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter RED BLUFF The Red Bluff Spartans baseball team one the first game with a walk off home run rallied late in the sec- ond game of a double header against the Chico Panthers Tuesday, but came away with a split, 1-0 early, 7-6 late. The Spartans and Panthers went through 6 scoreless in the opening game before Tren- ton Coates came in and hit a walk off home run in the bot- tom of the seventh for the win. Chico scored early in the late game, and by the end of the sixth led 7-4. That's when the Spartans rallied. Austin Youngblood led off the seventh with a single to center. After a pop out to center, Kolby Button earned a walk to put runners on first and second. Another pop out to center brought Wesley Clawson to the plate, where he walked to load the bases with two outs. Evan Tanner stepped into the box and reached on a drib- bler down the third base line. Youngblood and Button both scored on a throwing error to first. Tanner stole second and the Spartans were in busi- ness, down 1 with a runner in scoring position. But the rally would end with a strikeout and the Spartans had to settle for the split and their first league loss. The Spartans finished with 6 earned on 9 hits and left 8 stranded.
