April has been designated Child Abuse Prevention Month in the United States since 1983. The Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of La Paz County Program needs more volunteers. CASA volunteers are ordinary people with extraordinary hearts and the desire to make a difference. A CASA volunteer visits his or her assigned child in the foster care system on a regular basis, interacts with all professionals involved in the case, and makes recommenda- tions directly to the court, ensur- ing the child's best interests are protected. With the support of CASA staff, volunteers increase a child's sense of self-worth, address educational needs, advocate for a permanent home and provide the guidance and connection to re- sources necessary for an indepen- dent future. CASA volunteers serve as critical fi gures in the lives of children who have suffered from abuse or ne- glect. After receiving special train- ing and being appointed by a judge, CASA volunteers gather all of the information involving a child's case, and make formal recommen- dations to the court on the child's behalf. As a result, children with a CASA volunteer spend less time in foster care and receive better access to support and services.
