4A – Daily News – Friday, March 19, 2010 WORLD BRIEFING Dems: health bill will reduce deficit by more than $100B WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats are pushing to the brink of passage a land- mark, $940 billion health care overhaul bill that would simul- taneously deliver on President Barack Obama’s promise to expand coverage while slashing the deficit, a strategy aimed at winning over the party’s fiscal conservatives. Leaving nothing to chance, the White House announced that Obama has put off a trip to Asia for a second time, delay- ing it until June. Obama was to have left Sunday — when the House is planning to vote. Said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi: ‘‘He wants to be here for the history.’’ The 10-year plan would pro- vide coverage to 32 million people now uninsured through a combination of tax credits for middle class households and an expansion of the Medicaid pro- gram for low income people. Release of the legislation later Thursday sets the stage for a House vote on Sunday, and Democrats have already sig- naled they plan to go it alone, without Republican support. The GOP has steadfastly opposed Obama’s plan from the outset. It would restructure one- sixth of the economy, covering 95 percent of eligible Ameri- cans, in the biggest expansion of the social safety net since Medicare was created in 1965. It would also impose new oblig- ations on individuals and busi- nesses. Beginning in 2014, most Americans would be required to carry health insur- ance. Medium-size and large companies that don’t provide coverage for their workers would face stiff financial penal- ties. Obama signs jobs bill WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has said he wants to focus laser-like on the public’s top concern: jobs. But the ongoing effort to remake the nation’s health care system keeps getting in the way. The White House held a cer- emony Thursday in the sunny Rose Garden where Obama signed into law a $38 billion jobs bill containing a modest mix of tax breaks and spending designed to encourage the pri- vate sector to start hiring again. Even with jobs on his imme- diate agenda, Obama’s opening remarks were about health care. ‘‘Let me say a few words about the latest development in the debate over health insurance reform,’’ Obama told the audi- ence of administration officials, lawmakers and interest groups. ‘‘I don’t know if you guys have been hearing, but there’s been a big debate going on here.’’ Health care looms so large in the political calculus that Obama on Thursday postponed a long-planned trip to the Pacif- ic so he could remain in Wash- ington for the final health care votes. Bul- lock subsequently canceled a planned appearance in London for the premiere of ‘‘The Blind Side,’’ for which she won an Oscar, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe. Representatives for James and Bullock did not respond to calls and e-mails seeking com- ment. Fess Parker dies departure, already pushed back by several days, was delayed until June. Obama gives thumbs-up to immigration bill WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is backing an immigration bill outline drafted by two senators that says illegal immigrants must admit they broke the law to become citizens. Obama says in a statement that the outline of a bill Sen. Chuck Schumer and Sen. Lind- sey Graham are crafting addresses border security and demands accountability from illegal immigrants and employ- ers who hire them. He says the critical next step is to translate their outline into legislation. Obama’s statement comes just three days before tens of thousands of immigrants and their supporters plan to rally in Washington to press the admin- istration and Congress to pass immigration reform. Clinton urges delay in startup of Iranian plant MOSCOW (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rod- ham Clinton and her Russian counterpart clashed openly Thursday over the planned launch this summer of Iran’s first, Russian-built nuclear power plant, highlighting a split in views over how to steer Iran away from nuclear weapons. Clinton did not criticize the long-delayed project directly but said the Obama administra- tion is opposed to the timing of the nuclear plant’s startup. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced the summer startup plans on Thurs- day, shortly after Clinton arrived for a two-day visit. The nuclear plant is an example of Russian-Iranian economic ties and technical cooperation, on terms that have long made the United States uncomfortable. It was a back- ground issue during a difficult period in U.S.-Russian relations last year and in the ongoing U.S.-led effort to bring new United Nations economic penalties against Iran over sus- picions that part of its nuclear program is aimed at building a $ Money $ 2 Lend Cash 4 Notes McKinley Mortgage Co. Clinton is seeing Putin on Friday. At a news conference with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov after talks on a wide range of issues, Clinton told reporters that Iran, while entitled to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, must reassure the world that it is not trying to build a nuclear weapon. Terror suspect called ’Jihad Jane’ cooperated PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Pennsylvania congressman says the U.S. terrorism suspect known as ‘‘Jihad Jane’’ cooper- ated in an international probe of radical Muslims. Republican Rep. Charles Dent says his information about Colleen LaRose is based on meetings with the FBI and other briefings. The 46-year-old LaRose lives in Dent’s district in Penns- burg in eastern Pennsylvania and is accused of conspiring with jihadist fighters and pledg- ing to murder a Swedish artist. She pleaded not guilty Thursday in Philadelphia to four counts. Dent believes the indictment was filed this month after investigators learned what they could from LaRose. The FBI and U.S. attorney’s office won’t comment on Dent’s remarks. Palestinian rocket kills Thai worker in Israel GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — A rocket fired by Gaza militants smashed into a green- house in an Israeli border vil- lage Thursday, killing a Thai worker in the first such death since Israel’s massive offensive against Hamas-ruled Gaza more than a year ago. The launch defied a long- standing ban by the Hamas on such attacks and highlighted the growing challenge to the Islam- ic militant group from more radical rivals, including al- Qaida-inspired firebrands. The rocket also raised the specter of Israeli retaliation and further conflagration at a time of renewed international focus ●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● 2 Now Enrolling Children Recently expanded and moved near Bidwell Elementary License # 525405817 (530) 209-8743 My qualifications include: B.A. in Elementary Education and experience teaching grades K-8. Israel has drawn tough U.S. criticism in recent days for plans to build hundreds more homes for Jews in disputed east Jerusalem. Major Mideast mediators — among them U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, European foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon — were to meet Friday in Moscow to seek a way forward after the row over Israel’s build- ing plan derailed plans to start indirect Israeli-Palestinian talks. Ashton visited Gaza on Thursday, the first senior diplo- mat to set foot in the blockaded territory in more than a year. Half an hour after her convoy of white SUVs entered Gaza through a heavily fortified Israeli crossing, the rocket was fired into an Israeli communal farm on the Gaza border. Dad praises kids who helped mom deliver baby SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — When Alana Sanders gave birth to her fourth child, the people on hand to towel off the baby and tie its umbilical cord weren’t the usual team of doc- tors or nurses. He was 85. Family spokeswoman Sao Anash said Parker, who was also TV’s Daniel Boone and later a major California winemaker and developer, died at his Santa Ynez Valley home. His death comes on the 84th birthday of his wife of 50 years, Marcella. ‘‘She’s a wreck,’’ Anash said, adding Parker was coherent and speaking with family just min- utes before his death. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. The first installment of ‘‘Davy Crockett,’’ with Buddy Ebsen as Crockett’s sidekick, debuted in December 1954 as part of the ‘‘Disneyland’’ TV show. The 6-foot, 6-inch Parker was quickly embraced by youngsters as the man in a coonskin cap who stood for the spirit of the American frontier. Boomers gripped by the Crockett craze scooped up Davy lunch boxes, toy Old Betsy rifles, buckskin shirts and trademark fur caps. ‘‘The Ballad of Davy Crockett’’ (‘‘Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee...’’) was a No. 1 hit for singer Bill Hayes while Park- er’s own version reached No. 5. Homeowner Frank Fontana says he was in bed when the man climbed in about 5:30 Wednesday morning. Fontana says he asked whether it was a woman who has keys to his home — and he grabbed a base- ball bat when a deep male voice answered, ‘‘No, it’s not.’’ Police say Fontana kept the man at bay until police arrived but didn’t hit him with the bat. Police say the intruder told them he was looking for shelter after a Tuesday night concert by rapper Jay-Z at the Mellon Arena.
