2A – Daily News – Friday, March 19, 2010 Community people&events In the military From the Firehouse: Help us, help you By DAVE CARR Red Bluff Fire Department There are a number of things you can do to help us in the event of an emergency at your house. We certainly hope you do not need our services but if you do several things can speed up the response and get assistance rapid- ly. First of all finding addresses can be a challenge so we ask that your address is visible from the street. Businesses in the city limits are required to have six inch address numbers and this will be checked during the annual fire safety busi- ness inspection. Schmidt completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. emergency at your house we need to find out medical history, nature of your medical problem and med- ications. Many people take numerous medications and it helps a great deal if they are written down and attached to the refrigerator. We have small red pouches to give out called "File of Life" and they are available at the fire station at 555 Washington St. The File of Life should be filled out for each member of the family and it includes name and most impor- tantly a list of your medications and medical history. This is especially helpful when we respond to people who are not conscious or not able to speak. Often we can discern what type of medical history a person has by the type of medica- tions they are taking. For responses to carbon monoxide alarms there are things you can help us with as well. First of all get your entire family out of the house and account for them and get them to fresh air. Leave windows and doors closed. Let us know where your water heater, furnace and other appliances are located. Any appli- ance that burns natural gas or propane has the potential to emit carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is an odor- less, tasteless gas that can be dead- ly at high levels. CO at 9 parts per million is the threshold that we consider a dangerous level. We can check your house and around your appliances to see if CO is accumulating in your house and ventilate the structure if CO is found. We may also check the bat- tery in your CO detector. Some miscellaneous things you can do to help us help you are chain up animals or put them in another room, turn down the vol- ume on the TV, unlock the front door or give a trusted neighbor a key so we don't need to force entry and cause damage. If you have a medical alert bracelet, key chain or necklace it will come with a control box usually a phone. Put any and all controllers out of reach of children or on surfaces that your dog or cat can get to. You would not believe how many times we have responded to false alarms because the cat or dog stepped on the medical alert system. RBFD responses for March 2 through 15: 65 emergency medical calls, 2 traffic collisions, 1 illegal burning call, 4 public service calls, 1 dumpster fire, 4 structure fires, 3 false alarms, 5 other type calls. As always, I welcome public comment and concerns. Dave Carr is an engineer with the Red Bluff Fire Department. He can be contacted at dcarr@rbfd.org or by calling the station at 527-1126.
