Anna Curry drove in three runs for the Lady Cardinals. RB Rhinos update Daily News photo by Rich Greene Corning’s Caleb Johnson slides safely back into first base,Thursday, against Chico. By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor CORNING— For the second straight day the Cardinals lost a 2-0 lead, but on Thursday they found a way to battle back to pull out a 6-3 win over the visiting Chico Panthers (3-4). Michael Garcia gave the Cardinals (5-1-1) three strong innings of relief and the Cardinals rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases with two outs. A stiff breeze played with the ball all day. Corning opened the scoring in the first inning after Daniel Mahutga hit what normally would have been a rou- tine ball into left field, but instead crossed up the Chico outfielder and dropped in behind in. Mahutga motored around to second base on the play and eventually scored when Marc Mason drove him in on a 2-run double later in the inning. Chico struck back in the top of the fourth inning on another ball that got hung up in the wind in left field. With a runner on second, Chico catcher Steven Koehnen smacked a ball that kept carrying with the aid of the wind straight over Corning left fielder Caleb Johnson’s head and even- tually over the fence to tie the game at 2-2. Garcia came into pitch in the fifth inning and retired the first two Chico batters on ground balls before getting into a bit of trouble. He walked Andrew Reed and then Pac Moxon hit a squibber that found its way past a diving Casey Cleland at first base for an infield single. Andy Amaro came up next and hit a grounder to the shortstop that was botched by Mason and Reed came around from second to score the go- ahead run. Corning came back in their half of the fifth when Tyler McIntyre ripped an an RBI single that scored Cody Fox. McIntyre’s hit almost didn’t hap- pen. Earlier in the bat he fouled off a pitch down the first base line that twist- ed and turned in the wind and fell foul in front of Chico first baseman Zach Korte who couldn’t run a normal line at it. In what would turn out to be the decisive sixth inning, Austin Grootveld was on first base with two outs when Mahutga singled past third base to keep the inning alive against Korte who had come on in relief. The next hitter, Cleland fouled off No. 3 Georgetown 83 PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The MAC champi- on Ohio Bobcats, who had a losing record in conference play, have found their way in March and now boast an NCAA tournament win for the first time in 27 years. Armon Bassett scored 32 points to lead the 14th-seed- ed Bobcats to a convincing 97-83 win over No. 3 seed Georgetown in the Midwest Regional. In early March, no one expected Ohio (22-14) to be in this position. The team had just finished a 7-9 sea- son in Mid-American Con- ference play and entered the conference tournament as the ninth seed. Ohio seized the lead early on its 3-point shooting and never had a serious let- down the rest of the way. The heavily favored Hoyas (23-11) made a small run in the second half that cut a 19- point lead down to seven, but they couldn't overcome the Bobcats. No. 13 Murray St. 66, No. 4 Vanderbilt 65 SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Danero Thomas hit a 15- footer as the buzzer sounded and 13th-seeded Murray State stunned No. 4 seed Vanderbilt. President Barack Obama must have been onto some- thing picking the revved-up Racers (31-4) to get past the first round in the West Regional. It was the school's first victory in the NCAA tournament in 24 years, and Murray State will play But- ler in the second round. For the second time in as many NCAA appearances, Vanderbilt (24-9) bowed out early as the higher seed. The Commodores were a first- round upset victim of Siena in 2008 when seeded fourth. Jermaine Beal made two the first offering on a foul ball that once again the wind pushed just out of fair play. Korte then plunked Cleland in the leg to push across the winning run. McIntyre added a couple of insur- ance runs on the next at-bat when he dropped a blooper down the right field line to score Mahutga and Fox. “It’s not pretty, but it gets the job done,” McIntyre said of those types of hits afterwards. For the second straight day, McIn- tyre wasn’t retired at the plate. He finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and three runs batted in. Mason, who had made the error that allowed Chico to go ahead in the fifth inning, finished off what was otherwise a fine defensive day by completing a nice looking double play in the seventh inning. “I just clear my head and have a short memory,” Mason said of how he deals with errors. As a team the Cardinals did just that as well, a day after losing a 2-0 lead and their first game of the season to Red Bluff. They’ll look to get another win streak going when they open up league play at Central Valley on Tuesday. Ohio, Murray State lead upset-filled first day No. 14 Ohio 97, over third-seeded George- town. A victory would put Tennessee in the round of 16 for the third time in four years. free throws with 12.7 sec- onds left to give Vandy the lead. B.J. Jenkins missed a rushed 3-pointer on the other end, but the ball went out of bounds off a Vander- bilt player with 4.2 seconds left, giving Murray State the final shot. No. 10 Saint Mary's 80, No. 7 Richmond 71 PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Omar Samhan had 29 points and 12 rebounds despite spending most of the game in foul trouble, and Saint Mary's pulled away to win an NCAA tournament game for the first time in six tries since 1959. The 10th-seeded Gaels (27-5) will play Saturday against Villanova in the sec- ond round. Mickey McConnell, the West Coast Conference tournament MVP, scored 23 points for the Gaels, who had a 40-18 rebounding edge and 21-4 advantage in second-chance points. No. 6 Tennessee 62, No. 11 San Diego State 59 PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Melvin Goins made his fourth 3-pointer with 19 seconds left after San Diego State cut the deficit to one point, and Tennessee held off the Aztecs 62-59 on Thursday night to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament’s Mid- west Regional. The sixth-seeded Volun- teers (26-8) will play Satur- day against No. 14 seed Ohio, an easy upset winner No. 11 Washington 80, No. 6 Marquette 78 SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Quincy Pondexter drove for a tiebreaking bank shot with 1.7 seconds left, and 11th-seeded Washington extended its remarkable late-season run into the NCAA tournament with a victory over Marquette. Pondexter scored 18 points and Isaiah Thomas 19 as the Huskies (25-9) won their eighth straight game in dramatic fashion, rallying from a 15-point deficit with 13 1⁄2 minutes left. No. 11 Old Dominion 51, No. 6 Notre Dame 50 NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Carleton Scott's 3-pointer rattled out in the closing sec- onds, and 11th-seeded Old Dominion stunned the Irish and star Luke Harangody. The Fighting Irish rushed the ball up the court as the clock wound down, but Scott's attempt to tie the game didn't fall and Harangody's putback at the buzzer wasn't enough. Frank Hassell scored 15 to lead Old Dominion (27- 8), which held Harangody to four points — and scoreless until the final minute. The Monarchs will play Baylor in the second round. No. 9 Northern Iowa 69, No. 8 UNLV 66 OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Ali Farokhmanesh hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 4.9 seconds left to lift ninth-seeded Northern Iowa over UNLV. Farokhmanesh found himself open after Kwadzo Ahelegbe had chewed up the majority of the clock fol- lowing Oscar Bellfield's tying 3-pointer for UNLV with 35 seconds remaining. Johnny Moran reversed the ball to Farokhmanesh, who drained the jumper with the shot clock running down. The Runnin' Rebels (25- 9) got one last chance to tie it, but Tre'Von Willis didn't get his 3-pointer off before the final buzzer and it was off-target anyway. Farokhmanesh finished with 17 points, including three 3-pointers in the sec- ond half, and Ahelegbe added 13 points as the Pan- thers (29-4) snapped a 20- year drought in the NCAA tournament. No. 2 Villanova 73, No. 15 Robert Morris 70, OT PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Scottie Reynolds responded to his benching with a clutch performance at the foul line in the final min- utes of regulation to help the Wildcats survive. Coach Jay Wright sat Reynolds at the start of the game to make a "teaching point," and he missed 13 of 15 shots from the floor for Villanova (25-7). But the senior star made seven of eight free throws in the final 3:06 to send the game into overtime, finishing with 20 points. No. 7 BYU 99, No. 10 Florida 92, 2OT OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Jimmer Fredette scored 37 points, including two 3-pointers in double overtime, to seal the Cougars' thrilling win over 10th-seeded Florida.
