L ike so many young women who are a part of a sorority, Sue Nussbaum, M.D., Sigma 1975, NU did not anticipate joining one. It was ultimately a surprise to her that she ended up making that decision. However, over the years, being surprised has become a mantra of Sue's. "I spent a great amount of time trying to see in the future and have learned that it is very difficult to have a rigid plan," Sue said. "It is good to have goals, but you should also be flexible and open to opportunities that come in front of you…be surprised!" It was at a fraternity where Sue fatefully met Barbara Moscicki, M.D., Sigma 1974, NU, who would go on to become her big sister. Barbie brought Sue to Sigma chapter, and she felt at home right away. "It was such a great group of women Barbie introduced me to," Sue said. "The chapter was, and hopefully still is, filled with smart and ambitious women; the diversity of these women was also very intriguing." Once she became an active member, Sue got involved in chapter leadership right away. She was the scholarship chairman, assistant to the recruitment chairman, and the Panhellenic representative. "I particularly enjoyed my Panhellenic experience as Delta Gamma's representative," she said. "It is interesting that today, I work with a variety of organizations and the goal is collaboration and community service. I also think that the sorority/fraternity collaboration and competition is a practice arena for life after college." Once she exited that arena, Sue knew she wanted to continue along the path of serving others. Receiving her M.D. and MBA from the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine and the Wharton Business School respectively, Sue has primarily worked in fields combining her education to improve overall health of individuals and communities. Now the executive director of the non-profit We Care Jacksonville, Sue oversees an organization dedicated to providing specialty healthcare access to uninsured, low-income individuals. It is composed of more than 400 volunteer physicians, several hospitals, and 10 free clinics. Last year, they referred patients to more than $18 million of donated specialty care, including cancer treatments, orthopedics, surgery, diagnostic testing, and much more. "I am very gratified in life when I am giving to others. Whether it is saying a simple hello to a stranger, giving food to a homeless person, or a donation to an important cause, I enjoy focusing on helping others have a better life," Sue said. "In my current work, I have the joy of helping people with no hope overcome serious illnesses such as breast cancer, blindness, pain, and debilitation. This is a great gift and fills my heart. I am glad to have found work that fills me up and energizes me to work hard and make a difference both in the present and into the future. But, when it all comes down to the most important and joyous part of my life, it is still my family and children. Nothing beats it!" Sue and her husband, Michael, have two daughters, Jackie (29) and Rachel (26), who she describes as loving, interesting, and just good people. "Having my daughters has impacted me because I never knew I could love so deeply as a parent," she said. "Parenting is unconditional and it has its challenges, but ultimately, it is an amazing love." Sue also enjoys walking along the water, whether it is the beautiful St. Johns River or the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville. She is blessed every day that she lives in a majestic city with many natural surroundings. Sue is also passionate about the environment and uses some of her free time to help with projects around Jacksonville.
