Juergen Janzen '89 Gains Valuable Friends, Experiences, and Lessons in Gamma Delta W hy did you decide to join Sigma Chi can be a difficult question, but for Juergen Janzen '89, the answer comes easily. "Going through recruitment gave me the opportunity to visit different fraternities. The culture of Sigma Chi certainly stood out from the rest; plus, the active members stressed how important the alumni are to the Chapter. Those were the biggest deciding factors for me," Juergen says. If there is one aspect of Gamma Delta that has stuck with Juergen throughout the years, it is the life lessons he gained as an undergraduate member. "The one lesson I learned that has stayed with me is accountability. Whether during pledgeship, as an active member, or throughout adulthood, we have to be accountable for not only our own actions but also for the actions of others. Incorporating this mindset into the choices I make every day and the activities I take part in has helped lead me to a successful career and a higher-quality lifestyle." Juergen attributes many of the doors opened to him early on to Gamma Delta, where he forged meaningful connections with brothers. "David Urton '86 was the one who really brought me into Sigma Chi," he says. "During recruitment, he took extra time to visit with my parents and told them not only what Sigma Chi is, but also shared information with them about the structure of the Fraternity. These brothers didn't just care about increasing Gamma Delta's membership; they were truly committed to recruiting quality men and going the extra mile to ensure Sigma Chi was the place for them. It is clear that this same commitment is instilled in Gamma Delta today, and I am hopeful that prospective Sigma Chis will continue to uphold that commitment well into the future." A loyal alumnus, Juergen stays involved with Gamma Delta and OSU, particularly with the Fraternity's initiation ceremony and meeting up with old friends at Homecoming. "Since graduating, the importance of staying involved has become more and more evident to me. By staying in touch, you not only benefit from the relationships you are connected with, you also show through example to the undergraduates just how meaningful Sigma Chi is. The commitment of alumni and the active Chapter working together for the betterment of Sigma Chi is what will keep our Fraternity at OSU alive and thriving for years." Almost 30 years later, Juergen's friendships with Gamma Delta brothers remain strong. He says, "My best friend is one of my pledge brothers, Charles Shaw '89. We get together several times a year, whether to golf or have dinner. Sometimes, my brothers and I will go on family vacations. Just recently, I went on a ski trip with my popo, Thomas Smith '88. Also, Tom Stewart '68 is a Gamma Delta and one of my neighbors who I spend a lot of time with. It amazes me how many valuable connections you can make with others simply by being members of the same Fraternity. After all these years, joining Sigma Chi is still undoubtedly one of the best decisions I've made in my life." Juergen works at Janzen Toyota in Stillwater, Oklahoma. His mother and father helped him get started to fulfill his dream of owning his first dealership. Juergen and his parents started the dealership in 1990, and Juergen has owned and operated the organization for the past 27 years. In his spare time, Juergen enjoys getting out and playing golf, spending time with his wife, Lorrie, and enjoying all the activities his teenage daughters, Keely and Makena, are involved with, primarily cheer and soccer.
