Tours such as these are funded through the Shasta College Agriculture Leadership Club due to all of the hard work and pas- sion that the students pour into the program. The ability to travel to the diverse sectors of the agriculture industry and tour the facilities and busi- nesses is an excellent and exciting opportunity for students to expand their knowledge and education beyond the reaches of the classroom. "Opportunities like these help to build a pipe- line of educated and skilled individuals for our Agricultural and Natural Resources industries and help us showcase the tal- ented students enrolled in our programs," said Trena Kimler-Richards, faculty advisor and mentor to the Shasta Ag Leader team. The Shasta College Ag- ricultural and Natural Re- sources program partners with high school agricul- tural education programs and trains students at the community college level to enter into viable careers or transfer to a university in pursuit of higher degree options. The program supplies a special employment op- portunity on the Shasta College farm through the Farm Dorm program where students are able to work on the school farm in exchange for room and board on the Shasta Col- lege campus. The farm house for the Farm Dorm students is be- ing renovated this spring and will be open in the fall with updated facilities. Applications for both summer employment and for the school year 2017- 2018 are being accepted. Write to BJ Macfarlane at bmacfarlane@shastacol- lege.edu for an application and more information. The Agriculture Lead- ership Club offers annual scholarships for both in- coming freshman and con- tinuing or transferring stu- dents. Multiple scholarships are awarded each year. The Collegiate Agricul- ture Leaders is a state- wide student organization that promotes leadership and career awareness in the Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Environ- mental Technology sector. CAL events serve to pro- vide students with oppor- tunities to excel outside of the classroom. The post-secondary divi- sion of the California Ag- riculture Teachers Associ- ation leads a student lead- ership committee where student events are orga- nized. Annually the committee plans the spring student competitions and events designed to promote lead- ership and career develop- ment. What other adventures are soon to come for the Ag Leaders? Upcoming events in- clude a local industry tour for the Agriculture Eco- nomics class, the Shasta County Farm Bureau speaking competition, and wrapping up the 2016-2017 school year at the annual spring banquet in May.
