26 UCW FEBRUARY 1-7, 2017 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM February 5th Call for more information 4624 BRAGG BLVD. The message read, "Anyone up for a ride this Saturday?" For the first time in months, my schedule was open. I wrote back and said I could ride. As Saturday got closer, the forecast showed that it was going to be 27 degrees. I knew at that point, that most people would back out. Let's be honest, some people won't ride below 70 degrees. Some riders consider riding in 50-degree weather crazy. I usually get all of my stuff together the night before, but for some reason, I did not. I woke up Saturday morning and started running down my cold weather mental checklist. First, I checked my tire pressure. In cold weather, the air molecules compress and deflate your tires. This can be dangerous. I had to dress for the extreme cold weather. Let's be honest, 27 degrees can be deadly or cause serious injury to a motorcyclist riding at 70 mph. That is a negative 2-degree wind chill, burr! Working my way from my bottom to my top, I picked out my boots. Added a pair of thin, wick-away socks and also a thick pair of socks. Then I added wick-away underwear, polypropylene underwear, a waterproof liner and my Gore-Tex Klim pants. For my top, I wore a polypropylene top and a long sleeve shirt. In the garage, I added my Gerbing electric jacket, a water/wind proof jacket and then my Gore-tex Klim jacket. I put on a baklava head scarf to help hold in heat on my head and protect my neck. Then, I put on my full face helmet and put on my glasses. Fun Fact: Wearing glasses does not hold the heat in but does reduce convection. Convection is similar to sitting in front of a fan or having the wind blow on you. Finally, I put on my glove liners and then my electric Gerbing gloves. I looked like the Michelin Man. I could barely move. Then I realized that my connector for my electric clothing was under the seat. So gloves off, seat off and got my cord out. I plugged in and was ready to go. To be honest, I was nice and toasty, but I realized that my movement was slow. Getting on the interstate, I found myself not looking over my shoulder but using only mirrors. At this point, I found myself being lazy and could have easily made a mistake. When I got to my friend's house, he asked me to come in. I told him that I was good because I did not want to spend the next 15 minutes taking my gear off and then putting it back on. He geared up and went to start his bike, and it was dead. So we decided to head to Raleigh in his car. When we got back, I geared up and made some notes for riding in the cold weather. Here are things that will help you enjoy the cold weather: Layer your clothing. Wear a full-face helmet with eye protection and wear a baklava head scarf to protect your neck. Make sure all of your extremities are covered and protected. Install a windshield and heated grips. Hydrate. Don't drink coffee or alcohol. Alcohol and caffeine increase the blood flow to the skin which may make you feel warmer, but it is actually causing you to lose body heat. Alcohol also affects your judgment which may already be impaired by the cold. Stay dry (even a light mist can make you wet and steal heat). Stop often. Stay alert! Stay alive!
