Theta Data sigma phi epsilon 5 T he Ohio Theta Chapter has wrapped up another successful event, the 2016 Ginger Greek Competition, a holiday-themed philanthropic event. The event raised more than $20,000. All funds raised from the event were donated to Smile Train, an organization that provides free cleft repair to children in need in underdeveloped countries across the globe. The chapter began working to grant children smiles in 2009 when former Chapter President mark Kroeger '11 began the philanthropic event. Mark was born with a cleft lip and wanted to help children that did not have the access to surgery that he did. The Ginger Greek Competition has grown every year since its inception. At the first event they raised $250, enough to fund one surgery. Over the next seven years, the Ohio Theta Chapter has raised more than $36,000, which has provided the funding for more than 145 life-changing surgeries. Cincinnati SigEp doubled its 2015 goal of $10,000 and set new records, raising funds for more than 80 surgeries. Our 147 SigEp brothers, along with the larger Greek community of UC, were able to shatter our previous year's record total by more than $5,000. We knew we set a steep goal for the 2016 Ginger Greek Competition, but we were driven to seek new heights because we wanted to share the gift of a smile with people in need. Since 2009, the chapter has grown to love Smile Train and the work they do, which is why the brothers created a new promotional video produced by Brother David miller '20.
