complete 14 of 21 passes for 150 yards and a touch- down in relief of McGloin on Sunday against Denver. "He played pretty well when he went in and Matt's hurt," Del Rio said in explaining the decision. "We're hoping to get Matt healthy enough to be in a backup role. Right now, that remains in question." McGloin was healthy enough to practice Wednesday in a limited ca- pacity, throwing right be- hind Cook as the quarter- backs went through their individual drills during the portion of practice open to the media. Cook, who will oppose the Texans' Brock Oswei- ler, hadn't done much in practice other than run the scout team until last week when he prepared to be McGloin's backup. Now the Raiders are asking him to help lead them to a play- off victory. "Justwanthimtobehim- self and go out and do what he can do," Del Rio said, "and want our team to go out and do what it can do." Cook, a fourth-round pick whom the Raiders traded up to select, made his NFL debut when he re- placed McGloin in the sec- ond quarter of the 24-6 loss to the Broncos. While he looked good at times, he also threw an interception and fumbled both teams he was sacked. Still, his teammates were compli- mentary of the demeanor he showed and Cook said he felt relaxed. "I felt pretty calm," Cook said of his debut. "With the hard circumstances, just going in there, I felt like I was confident. I know the offense well. I've been in the system for almost a year now. We were running stuff that I've been famil- iar with, so it was actually fun to get out there and get some reps." Cook should be more prepared Saturday af- ter getting a full week of practice and having a game plan geared to his strengths. But even with the advance notice, Cook still expects his stomach to churn about the same. "I was nervous last week just being activated," Cook said. "Being inactive all season long and finally knowing that I was one play away, I was prepar- ing like I was the guy. So, I was nervous going into the Denver game, just like I'll have the nerves going into this game. So, it's all the same." Cook was the MVP of a Rose Bowl win over Stan- ford as a sophomore at Michigan State and the winning quarterback of the Cotton Bowl a year later against Baylor. A two-time Big Ten champion quarter- back, he also led the Spar- tans to the College Football Playoff last season. His for- mer college coach, Mark Dantonio, thinks that expe- rience will serve him well this week. "I know it's an elevated level of play and it's all rel- ative and everything, but he's played on a big stage and he's had a lot of anx- iety, big-game jitters and things like that and he's played very, very well in those games," Dantonio said during an appear- ance Wednesday on NFL Network. "I think that's go- ing to serve him as well as anything as he takes this opportunity and has an opportunity to play this weekend." Cook went into the draft among the quarterbacks considered by teams in des- perate need at the position. The Raiders made him the seventh quarterback taken when they grabbed him as a value pick in the fourth round, plucking him ahead of the Dallas Cow- boys — a team heavily ru- mored to be interested but who have since been quite happy with Dak Prescott. Instead of going to a team where he'd compete as a starter, Cook was a third-stringer not expected to see the field. He said that hasn't affected his readi- ness to play. "I think I've always been ready to go in if they needed me," Cook said. "There's still so much to learn, so much for me to improve on. Watching Derek play, watching Matt play, they do a lot of things that I need to get better at." Come Saturday, he'll get a chance to do something neither of his fellow quar- terbacks have done: start a playoff game. Raiders FROMPAGE1 But Meier, with his size at 6-foot and 210 pounds and willingness to be phys- ical on the forecheck, is the closest player the Sharks have to the 6-2, 215-pound Hertl, who has had his greatest offensive success on a line with Pavelski and Thornton. The tantalizing trio fig- ures to at least start Thurs- day's game against the siz- zling Minnesota Wild on the same line. "These are two great players. Playing with them, it's going to be a lot of fun," Meier said. "But it's impor- tant that I just go out there and play my game. They're going to make great passes. It's just about me paying attention to details." Nieto, who has two as- sists in 16 games this sea- son, had only been in the lineup in a depth role for three of the last 15 games. He was a second-round draft choice. Sharks FROM PAGE 1 COLLEGEMEN'S BASKETBALL Tenn.-Martin vs. Belmont:2 p.m., ESPNU. Purdue at Ohio State: 4p.m., ESPN. Connecticut at Memphis: 4 p.m., ESPN2.
