At complete freedom, that is. How do I know? I DANCED BY MYSELF! I just couldn't stand it any longer. The music was terrifi c, and I just HAD to dance. There was no denying it. The dance fl oor was crowded. I could lose myself in the crowd, I thought. So, I kinda slid down off the stool and walked quickly to the dance fl oor -- before I lost my nerve. I went over to a corner where I wasn't as noticeable. And I DANCED! Yeah, I felt pretty self-conscious at fi rst, but I know I'm a good dancer, and I LOVE TO DANCE. Pretty soon a guy was dancing with me. The rest, as they say, is history. It wasn't long before I was dancing almost every dance with a lot of different people. The man sitting next to me said, "You know what I thought when I saw you dancing by yourself? I thought 'Good for her!'" Since then, I never hesitate to get up and dance by myself. I usually don't know a soul - why should I care what they think? It just doesn't make sense to me not to dance because I'm waiting for someone to ask me. Besides, what are the chances I would meet anyone I could be interested in a bar? NOT! Last night I had an interesting ex- perience. I danced with a guy who used the word "communication." Uh oh, I thought. NO ONE talks about com- munication in Quartzsite. I could tell I was in trouble. This man interested me, AND he was a great dancer, AND he smiled a lot! As we continued dancing almost every dance, he mentioned the word "spirituality." My concern deep- ened: Is this a guy I could be interested in? Red fl ags, big time. It occurred to me how much easier it was for me to dance with someone who was a smoker and/or had too much to drink. NO WAY could I be interested in a man like that. I was safe, knowing he was no threat to my independence, my travel plans, or my freedom. I could just dance and laugh and not be in any danger of "future."
