New Christy Minstrels in Quartzsite January 14 By Joanne Winer The New Christy Minstrels are coming back to Quartzsite this year for another great musical evening! The lineup has changed over the past years they have been coming to the Quartzsite Improvement Assoc. (QIA) but the music is still the best folk music you will ever hear. Their shows are mostly sold out for each performance, so be sure to get your tickets in advance and be assured of a seat. The band will be here for two shows on Saturday, January 14 at the Q.I.A. One show will be in the afternoon at 2 p.m. and the other will be in the evening at 7 p.m. Tick- ets for each show are $15 and you can get them at the door or buy ad- vance tickets from the Q.I.A. offi ce. The New Christy Minstrels have been coming to the Q.I.A. every win- ter since 2010 when they fi rst ap- proached the Town to fi nd out why they had never been invited to come here, especially since one of their most popular songs was the Hi Jolly song. Randy Sparks, who has been the leader of this group since it fi rst began, was driving through this area back in the late '50s and saw the sign on Main St. at the beginning of Cemetery Road that designat- ed the Hi Jolly Camel Driver tomb (pyramid). He stopped to see it and read what it was about and as he left town and headed back home to Califor- nia, he came up with the lyrics and music for it. The song has been on several of his albums, and he said he just wondered why Quartzsite had never asked them to come. So after talk- ing to the mayor and the mayor talking to the Q.I.A., a new event was scheduled for that January, and they have been coming here every year since. Randy also wrote another Quartzsite song called "Set your sights on Quartzsite" after the fi rst year when they were so well re- ceived. The Q.I.A. was almost sold out the fi rst time they came, and they have been very popular every year, now doing two shows. The New Christy Minstrels also have a non-profi t organization and gives free concerts to the children in the local schools, and has been per- forming in different schools in our county. Their music may be from back in the '50s and '60s, but it still is very popular to those who grew up listening to them on the Hoote- nanny Show and their own show a long time ago. Their songs include Summertime, Green Green, This Land is Your Land, Hi Jolly, We Were Just Americans, and many more favorites from their past al- bums and shows. This is really a great evening of entertainment, and some people have been going to see them every year when they come--the music is that good! Be sure to get your ad- vance tickets and bring a pillow to sit on because this show is one you will never leave your seat once it starts except for snacks and breaks! For more information, please call the Q.I.A. at 928-927-6325.
