Twoplayswerepresented on Wednesday, Dec. 21, by students at Manton Elemen- tary School. Everyyeartheschooldoes a large performance but this year there were both tradi- tional and non-traditional performances with kin- dergarten through fourth grade students performing a play called, "The Cross- word Puzzle." The a story is about a child that was doing a Christmas crossword puz- zle and can't figure out one of the names of Santa's rein- deer. Come to find out the reindeer was named Leroy andhewasRudolph'scousin. It is a comedy with singing and line dancing and great entertainment. The fifth- through eighth- graders did a play called "A Thousand Cranes," which is a less traditional play to per- form."AThousandCranes"is a true story of lively athletic girl from Japan, Sadako Sa- saki. Sadako lived in Japan during World War II. She was two-years-old when the atomicbombwasdroppedin 1945.Bytheageof12,Sadako haddevelopedLeukemiadue to radiation exposure. Inthisplay,Sadako'sgood friend, Kenji, reminds her of the old story that, "if a sick person folds 1,000 paper cranes, the gods will grant her wish and make her healthy again." Sadako begins to fold her paper cranes with the same determination she had once trained for her race. However before she com- pletes her task of folding 1,000 cranes, she is vis- ited by her beloved grand- mother, who guides Sadako to the spirit world and as- sures her that her wish for 1,000 cranes and for peace in the world, will be carried on by others living after her. Though Sadako's story is sad, it brings a message of peace in the world. After her death, Sadako's friends and classmates did finish fold- ing the rest of her cranes to make 1,000. Today, children in Japan and all over the world send paper cranes to be placed at the feet of Sadako's statue in the Hiroshima Peace Park. Their wish is engraved on the base of the statue: "This is our cry, this is our prayer, peace in the world."
