Asaninvestor, your main goals will change at different times in your life. During your working years, you need to grow as many re- sources as possible for retirement. Once you re- tire, how- ever, you will likely need to focus more on getting income from your invest- ments. But what are your options? There's no shortage of income-producing in- vestments, of course. You might immediately think of bonds, which can pro- vide regular interest pay- ments and probable pres- ervation of principal, provided the bonds are considered "investment grade." Still, if interest rates are low when you re- tire – as they have been for several years now – bonds might not provide you with as much income as you need. And just as im- portantly, the income you receive from most bonds won't rise over time, leav- ing you susceptible to in- flation and the loss of pur- chasing power. Consequently, you may also need to explore other types of income-generat- ing vehicles, including div- idend-paying stocks and real estate investment trusts (REITs). Some stocks have not only paid but also in- creased their dividends for many consecutive years. These stocks have histor- ically provided the poten- tial for rising income to help combat inflation and are typically well-run com- panies that strive to re- ward their investors. None- theless, you need to recog- nize that even these stocks are not obligated to pay you dividends, and they are free to lower or discontinue them at any time without notice. Now, let's turn to a sec- ond type of potential in- come-producing asset: Real estate investment trusts (REITs). Different types of RE- ITs are available. For ex- ample, equity REITs in- vest in and own commer- cial properties, such as hotels and shopping cen- ters, while mortgage RE- ITs, as the name suggests, own and invest in property mortgages. Is one form of REIT better than another? There's no simple answer. On the one hand, mort- gage REITs are considered riskier than equity REITs. However, mortgage REITs often pay quite large divi- dends, although the payout can be inconsistent. (Like all REITs, mortgage REITs must pay 90% of their tax- able income to investors in the form of dividends. Due to this requirement, REITs generally need to raise cap- ital to finance their growth plans, and this neces- sity can affect their share prices.) Scott Camp is in his second year as chairman of the board and has run with strategy, working to- gether with our board for great chamber momentum to continue. We conducted 14 ribbon cuttings and have seen our Ambassador program grow thanks to Amanda Jenkins and all the Ambassadors and making even more im- pact throughout our busi- ness community. Jason and Nathaniel continue to do great work in the office. The chamber continued all of our normal events such as Good Morning, Red Bluff. We will continue with several newer events that were extremely ex- citing; our Business Expo And Mixer in February, the Cowboy Golf Tournament in April — both of which were sold out. We promoted more than 235 community events that assist local business and or- ganization, many of which bring in visitors to our area. The phone calls, office vis- its, e-mails, website hits and Facebook presence all have continued to increase. We sent out over 700 visi- tor information and reloca- tion packets and over 3,000 Calendar of Events were viewed this year. Our Parades and Farm- er's Markets were amaz- ing and continue to grow. We have increased our part- nership with regional and statewide chambers and tourism organizations for greater effectiveness to pro- mote our city and county. Our chamber dinner in September was a wonder- ful event filled with awards and fun. Our second edition of our Chamber Business Di- rectory and Tourism Guide was completed in Decem- ber and has been greatly received. We ended the year with our 2nd annual Chamber Christmas Breakfast at Red Bluff Dodge. It brought in dozens of toys for the CHiP's Toys for Tots. So much more happened throughout the year that I am unable to fit in my col- umn this month — so I in- vite you to please visit our website and Facebook page for more information. Our desire is to con- tinue to encourage busi- ness, tourism and the lo- cal economy, not with just "busyness," but strategic ef- fort to strengthen and grow our local economy. Thank you all for being a member of the chamber, volunteering and support- ing us throughout the years. More than 4,000 hours were logged in by volunteers to the chamber through events and daily chamber promo- tion of our area this past year alone. Congratulations volunteers, we couldn't do it without you. 2017 will be a great year — continuing the legacy. 5th annual Business Expo set for February RED BLUFF CHAMBER CONTRIBUTEDPHOTO The 2016Business Expo And Mixer.
