HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL HolidayClassictipsofftoday By Chip Thompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter RED BLUFF After a scoreless first half of play, the Red Bluff Lady Spartans scored three times in the opening minutes of the sec- ond half Tuesday night and shut out the Paradise Bobcats 3-0. The first goal came when Megan Thompson was able to drive past a defender and run half the length of the pitch be- fore passing off to Maya Cruz for the score. Just minutes later, Ha- ley Scott would score again on the Bobcats. The third goal came after a penalty kick from Rosy Alfaro was knocked down by the Bob- cats' keeper, who tried to fall on the ball. She bobbled it and Thompson was in position to take advantage and tap it into the empty goal. The Spartans win comes after a big win and a pair of losses over the weekend at the Foothill Girls Tournament in Palo Cedro. The Spartans lost to the U-Prep Panthers 1-0 Friday before trounc- ing the Anderson Cubs 8-0. On Saturday Red Bluff lost 2-1 to the Pleasant Valley Vikings. The Spartans are 4-3-1 on the season and are scheduled to face the county rival Corning Cardi- nals (1-2) at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20 in Corning for their last game before the Christmas break. The Cardinals hosted Live Oak Tuesday afternoon. As of 8:15 p.m., no score had been posted. By Jerry McDonald Bay Area News Group ALAMEDA The Raiders re- turned to work Tuesday rested and ready. And in the case of left guard Kelechi Osemele, relieved. It turns out the "illness" which caused Osemele to be a late scratch from last Thurs- day's 21-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs was a kidney stone, something he revealed to report- ers following practice in excru- ciating detail. "It's frustrating, but you re- ally don't have control over the things that happen with your health," Osemele said. "I'm just fortunate." Osemele indicated to Raiders fans on Twitter Monday "Great workout and it's safe to say I've made a full recovery." He is ex- pected to be back in the starting lineup when the Raiders visit the San Diego Chargers Sunday. As tough as it was to lose a lineman who has gone a long way toward making the Raiders one of the top lines in the NFL, rookie seventh-round pick Vadal Alexander filled in admirably. "I didn't know I was play- ing until I was warming up at the stadium," Alexander said. "You've got to approach every week like you're the starter, whether you are or not, be- cause anything can happen. Each week can be a whole dif- ferent situation." And just like the previous three times, Green rose to the chal- lenge, burned the opponent and sealed a narrow Warriors win. The final in New Orleans: 113- 109 Warriors over the Pelicans to close out a 4-1 road trip. With 13 seconds left, trailing by two, the Pelicans missed a free throw. But they got their own re- bound. Then they kicked it out and found Anthony Davis, one of the game's most gifted players, isolted on the mid-post. But he was isolated on Green. The Pelicans dumped it to Da- vis. The clocked ticked from 7 sec- onds to 6 to 5. Davis readied for his move. But before he could, Green bolted his hand to the ball, at risk of a foul, and cleanly swiped Davis. It bounced to the Warriors. Green, fouled moments later, would seal the game with two free throws. Martin Jones made 29 saves, including two stops in overtime, and saved shots by Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews and Nikita Sos- hnikov in the shootout to cap the win for the Sharks, who still haven't lost in Toronto since 2002. Matthews had a goal and an as- sist for the Maple Leafs, who had a 2-0 lead after two periods.
