SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal judge has ruled that a San Diego school district violated a teacher's constitutional rights when it ordered him to remove two patri- otic banners from his classroom because they ''overemphasized God.'' District Court Judge Roger Benitez ruled Feb. 26 that Poway Unified School district over- stepped its bounds when it ordered math teacher Bradley Johnson to take down two large banners in January 2007. One banner with red, white and blue stripes displayed the phrases ''In God We Trust,'' ''One Nation Under God,'' ''God Bless America,'' and ''God Shed His Grace on Thee.'' The other read ''All Men Are Created Equal, They Are Endowed By Their Cre- ator.'' The judge noted other teachers were allowed to display religious-themed personal posters. 2B – Daily News – Saturday, March 6, 2010 SOUTHERN GOSPEL CONCERT SERIES FREE CONCERT! - Southern Gospel at it's finest - Wonderful for entire family - Invite friends and family 1005 So. Have you ever known anyone who was accused of something that didn't remotely come close to that person's character? They were get- ting a bad rap. People often form opinions about others based on what we call hearsay. They may not even know the person or their character before an opinion is formed - that person gets what we call a bad rap. This happens to God all the time. People form an opinion about God and He gets a bad rap for things he isn't even a part of. Years ago my wife and I were meeting with an insurance sales- man. I asked him if certain things were covered in the insurance poli- cy and he told me no, because those things were considered an, "act of God". I proceeded to tell him that catastrophes or disasters were not from God; my God doesn't act like that. Through years of ministry I have heard so many people give God a bad rap, saying that he brings tragedy into people's lives. The way some folks talk you would think that God was against them and not for them. I remember when I was first saved and started turning my life over to God. My thinking and opin- ions about God didn't line up with His character at all. Coming out of a godless home and out of a drug lifestyle, I had no idea who God really was or what He was all about. I started attending church and shortly after that I got saved but for months I thought when I walked into the church building it would fall in at any moment because of the kind of person I was. Why would I think that? Because I had given God a bad rap. At this time in life I knew nothing about the Bible or praying and I certainly didn't know about God and His character. In these times, we need to keep straight what is right and wrong and what is good and bad. The lines have been extremely blended in today's society. As Christians we must help people see the correct and true character of God. Look at the life of Jesus. Jesus modeled truth and goodness. He healed the sick and set the captive free. You don't see Jesus making people sick, and not forgiving…Why? Acts 10:38 tells us, "Jesus went about doing good and heal- ing all who were oppressed by the devil for God was with him." Everywhere Jesus went and everything He did was based on truth and goodness. Jesus saved the lost, healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, caused the lame to walk, mended broken hearts, rebuked storms and set the captive free! You don't see Jesus making people sick, causing storms, turning people away and not forgiving…Why? Because that type of stuff is bad and Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed. John 10:10 paints us a very clear picture of what Jesus is all about and what His character is. "The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly." God is not the one stealing, killing or destroying. People constantly ask the question, "Is this Gods will for me?" If you want to know for cer- tain if something is God's will, put it to the test of God's word and John 10:10. If it is stealing from you, killing or, destroying you it's not God, but if it will bring life to you then it is God. In the Message, John 10:10 reads like this, " A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy, I have come so they can have real life and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of." Jesus not only came to offer eternal life to lost souls but he came to give a better life then you have ever dreamed of while you walk out your jour- ney here on earth. Don't give God a bad rap for something He had or has no part in. Maybe you have found yourself reading this article and you don't know Jesus as the one who forgives and saves. Today would be a great day for you to ask Jesus into your life and experience all God has for you. Just call upon the name of Jesus and you will be saved. Then find a Bible preaching church and get involved so you can grow as a Christian. Larry Jensen and his wife, Chaunda, have lived in Red Bluff for 17 years and are founders of Jensen Ministries. This year's speakers include Gary Skinner, author of the book "plain vanilla wrapper." He is an outstanding commu- nicator with a passion to see those who are hurting experi- ence transformatin through Jesus Christ. Skinner will be joined by Bob Knepper, two time Major League Baseball All-Star playing for the Giants and Astros. This will be a time of relaxing with topics of disciple- ship, sharing faith and dealing with hardship discussed. The retreat will be held March 26-28 at the Weaverville Victorian Inn in Weaverville. (MCT) Pastor Raymond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ, Kansas City, Mo.: This question poses a moral dilemma for many because such disasters happen outside the carriage of human understanding. But the wise heart never dismisses the providential face of events that trouble us. The meaning of a thing like the Haiti disaster is not just that it happened; the question is why it happened. Disasters such as this take us beyond the geological scientific expla- nation of disastrous events. The moral factor of our exis- tence touches us personally and judges our environment. The Bible declares that man and man's environment are God's business. (Psalms 8:4; 24:1, 2) With such a world- view we're not set apart from our physical environment. Our conduct affects our physical environment. Josephus, the Jewish historian, was of a prophetic mind and saw the earthquake mentioned in the Book of Amos (Amos 1:1, 2; 2:6-8) as God's response to the sacrilege of the people. Josephus saw the earthquake with the same mind as the prophet Amos, symbolic of the judgment of God. The biblical prophets inform us that the Earth is made subject to destruction. God's judgments are in the Earth (Isa- iah 24). The Haiti disaster troubles us, mainly because of loss of lives. But our resolve must be that we will never understand here in the present. Those who are yet troubled in mind should find comfort in reading Psalm 46.
