Beaubois went 9 for 14 from the field and 3 for 6 on 3-pointers in 24- plus minutes, taking advantage of the absence of the team's No. 2 scorer, Jason Terry. The injured guard, who averages 17 points a game, is expect- ed to miss 10-14 days following Fri- day's surgery to repair facial injuries sustained in Wednesday night's win over Minnesota. With the victory that improved the league's longest active streak, the Mavericks clinched their 10th con- secutive season over .500. Carl Landry had 21 points, and Beno Udrih and Tyreke Evans each added 20 for the Kings, who'd won three of their previous four. After trailing by as many as 10 in the first half, Dallas closed the third quarter with a 9-1 run with the help of Shawn Marion's back-to-back baskets, building an 85-72 advantage heading into the final 12 minutes. The Kings got as close as 102-100 with 1:36 remaining on Evans' layup. Sacramento had a shot at a tie, but Caron Butler stole the ball from Evans, leading to two free throws from Nowitzki with 51 seconds left. Nowitzki and Jason Kidd each converted two foul shots over the final 21.5 seconds to seal the victory. Kidd had 17 points and 12 assists. Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle was ejected in the second quarter by referee Bob Delaney after picking up two quick technicals while protesting a no-call on a drive by Nowitzki. Assistant coach Dwane Casey took over for Carlisle with Dallas trailing 43-33, and the Mavericks went on a 19-10 run over the remain- der of the second quarter. Sacramento held a 53-52 halftime lead, despite Beaubois' 16-point sec- ond quarter. The Mavericks have won the last 12 meetings with the Kings in Texas, and have taken 13 of the last 15 matchups. Jeff Francis felt good. And that's a big deal. After missing 18 months because of shoulder prob- lems that required surgery, Francis was back on the mound again. He gave up four runs, four hits and two walks in two innings of the Colorado Rockies' 7-4, split-squad loss to the San Francisco Giants on Friday. ''It felt good to get out there and get the blood pumping against a familiar lineup. Physically, I felt good,'' said Francis, who last pitched on Sept. 12, 2008, and finished with a dismal 4-10 record after going 17-9 in 2007. The 6-foot-5, 205- pound Francis tried to throw with an easy motion, mainly fastballs. ''I did throw a few changeups, but mostly I would throw five or six (fastballs) in a row, even behind in the count. That's pretty unusual,'' Francis said. Francis walked the first batter he faced, Aaron Rowand, but got the next three men with little diffi- culty in the first inning. In the second, he gave up a leadoff single to Giants catcher Bengie Molina, walked John Bowker and then watched Uribe's shot sail far over the left-field bullpen and into a row of trees. Matt Downs doubled and Rowand brought him home with a single. Francis said he was uncertain when he might throw again, but if he is try- ing to stick to pitching every fifth day, his next start would come on Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals in Tuc- son. Giants right-hander Matt Cain, meanwhile, was feeling much better about his first start. He pitched three innings, giving up a run on five hits and striking out two. He was pleased by the fact that he didn't walk a batter, a good sign this early. ''Keeping the walks down always is a plus,'' said Cain, who was 14-8, with a 2.89 ERA in 33 starts last season. Giants manager Bruce Bochy liked Cain's effi- ciency and the fact that he kept the ball down. The Giants won their third straight game with a big offensive day from Molina, who had three hits, including a two-run homer in a three-run fifth inning. Molina now has four hits on the spring. NOTES: Giants closer Brian Wilson was ineffec- tive in the sixth, giving up a run on two hits and a walk. ... The Giants play split- squad games against Ari- zona in Scottsdale and Mil- waukee in Phoenix. Left- hander Jonathan Sanchez will start against the Dia- mondbacks and right-han- der Kevin Pucetas against the Brewers. Uribe, Molina homer, Giants win again PHOENIX (AP) — Ben Sheets acknowledged being a little nervous but insisted it had nothing to do with fac- ing his former team. It was more about facing hitters for the first time in 17 months. Sheets, who signed a $10 million, one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics in the offseason, started Fri- day's 8-7 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers and tossed 1 2-3 healthy innings. The right-hander addressed several issues regarding the elbow surgery that forced him to miss last season. He denied any bad feelings between himself and the Brewers and said he was enthusiastic about returning to the form that made him a two-time All- Star in Milwaukee. ''I thought it went great,'' Sheets said after his 32- pitch outing. ''Any time I come off the mound healthy it's a plus. I know I'm get- ting better. I feel it, my body feels it. The more throwing I get in, the stronger my arm gets. That's as good as I wanted.'' Yovani Gallardo pitched two scoreless innings, and Gregg Zaun and Alcides Escobar each drove in two runs for Milwaukee. Travis Buck and Antho- ny Recker homered for the A's. Sheets gave up two runs and four hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out one. He was more concerned about the command of his breaking ball than how his arm felt. ''I did not get one break- ing ball over the plate,'' he said. ''It didn't seem like I got it over my last live bat- ting practice, either.'' Gallardo, who became the Brewers' ace in Sheets' absence, said it was odd to see his former mentor in a different uniform. ''It was strange seeing him in yellow and green,'' Gallardo said. ''But it's part of baseball. It's good to see him back and I wish him luck.'' Gallardo gave up a triple to Eric Chavez but struck out two and looked fluid. ''There was a little bit of excitement going out there for the first time, but it worked out,'' he said. ''I'm very satisfied. Everything went great.'' Steffan Wilson had three hits and drove in a run for Milwaukee. Ryan Braun and Jim Edmonds also drove in runs. Mark Ellis and Greg Gross added RBI singles for the A's. The A's scored seven runs, all after two were out and no one on, to rally from a six-run deficit. NOTES: A's RHP Jason Jennings threw a simulated game. ... Chavez made his debut at first base for Oak- land and got some advice from Brewers first base coach Ed Seder. ''I was cov- ering first when I didn't need to and the coach whis- pered, 'Hey, you don't need to be here right now.' I said, 'I just wanted to say hi.''' ... Brewers OF Trent Oeltjen bruised his left wrist when he was hit by a pitch from Andrew Bailey. Oeltjen will be sent to a hand specialist Saturday. Ben Sheets passes first test for Athletics Hawks beat Warriors ATLANTA (AP) — With leading scorer Joe Johnson playing despite flulike symp- toms, the Atlanta Hawks needed someone else to come up big. Turns out, four players did: Josh Smith, Al Horford, Mike Bibby and Jamal Craw- ford. Smith scored a season- high 29 points and Horford added 27 points and 15 rebounds as the surging Hawks held off the Golden State Warriors 127-122 on Friday night. Atlanta, which has won four straight and six of seven, improved to 25-7 at home. The Hawks had six players in double figures, including Bibby, who had a season-high 23 points, and Crawford, who scored 12 of his 14 in the final quarter. ''That was really big, the way we took up the slack for Johnson. He was under the weather. We wanted to pick him up,'' Smith said. Johnson, averaging 21.7 points per game, played 37 minutes. He shot 0 for 6 in the first half and finished 3 of 14 from the field, scoring 10 points to go with eight assists. Stephen Curry led the Warriors, who lost their third in a row and fifth in six games, with 31 points and 11 assists. Golden State dropped its ninth consecutive road game and fell to 4-26 away from home. Anthony Morrow had 21 points for the Warriors. C.J. Watson and Anthony Tolliver each scored 20, and Corey Maggette added 18. ''My shot was falling in the second quarter and we went on a little run,'' Curry said. ''We stayed in the game as long as we could, we just couldn't get enough stops down the stretch.'' Bibby finished with seven 3s, a season best and two shy of his career high. ''We had a chance and we needed to make a couple of shots down the stretch. We didn't do that and the Hawks made their free throws,'' Golden State coach Don Nelson said. ''No complaints. We played at a high level and we lost.'' Golden State got within 119-118 on a three-point play by Curry with 49.6 seconds left, but the Hawks went 8 for 8 at the free throw line down the stretch to clinch the win. Horford, Smith, Crawford and Marvin Williams, who had 12 points and 14 rebounds, each hit a pair of free throws.
