Calendar of events All chamber members are asked to help in com- piling information for one of the more popular of the chamber's resident and tourist handouts — the annual calendar of events. This 4-page listing of events taking place in our area throughout the year is distributed to visitors, local residents, organiza- tions, media and publica- tions throughout the en- tire state. You can help by supply- ing the chamber with any information regarding date, location, contact infor- mation, etc., of any major or traditional events that will take place in Tehama County next year. In addition to major events like the Red Bluff Round-Up in April, the calendar lists other popu- lar events such as the Farm City Night in November and the Relay for Life in May. In order to make the list as complete as possible and not leave any event out, we ask several times for help in identifying these events with appropriate dates, etc. So please, if you know of any event already sched- uled for next year, call the chamber office at 527- 6220, fax the event sched- ule at 527-2908 or e-mail the event schedule to ja- son@redbluffchamber. com so that we can include them in the 2017 Calendar of Events. The deadline for submit- ting items for the calendar is Dec. 1. Charlie Baker's administration. The screenings will begin on Jan. 6, with both compa- nies guaranteeing that ev- ery driver on the road will have passed a thorough state criminal background check by April 3, accord- ing to the separately nego- tiated deals. The timeta- ble, officials said, is about a year ahead of the schedule contemplated under a law approved this year by the Democratic-controlled Leg- islature and signed by the Republican governor. The new Massachusetts protocols establish a "na- tional standard" for screen- ing those who drive for the ride-hailing firms, Baker said. "With the signing of these agreements, consum- ers who take advantage of the innovative technology services provided by trans- portation network compa- nies can have confidence that the driver has un- dergone a thorough back- ground check that includes both criminal and driv- ing records," Baker added, using another term to de- scribe companies such as Uber and Lyft. The criminal background checks, to be conducted by a newly created division of the Department of Public Utilities, will include verifi- cation that the driver is not a registered sex offender. The companies will be re- quired to perform twice an- nual checks of driving re- cords. While the agreements announced Monday were termed voluntary, the law that established the state's first operating rules for ride-hailing firms envi- sioned the two-tiered driver screening system, with one check performed by the company and the other by the state. The law does not man- date that drivers be finger- printed. Boston cabbies, who are fingerprinted un- der city rules, sharply criti- cized the omission of a fin- gerprinting requirement for the app-based services. Besides the new state tests, San Francisco-based Uber said in a statement it would continue background checks currently performed on drivers by a third-party vendor.
