John Wall had 19 points and 11 assists for the Wizards, but committed a career-high 11 turnovers. CHUCK BURTON โ€” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE By Doug Ferguson The Associated Press NASSAU, BAHAMAS Tiger Woods has gone through two back surgeries since he last played a golf tournament 15 months ago. He had another back surgery that knocked him out of the Masters for the first time in 2014. He had four knee surgeries be- fore that. None of that matters to Er- nie Els when Woods returns to competition this week. Els is more curious about what's going on in his head. "The talent's there. It's been proven. It doesn't go away," Els said. "It's what you think of yourself. It's what you think where you are. We look at this great player, but he's not seeing the same stuff in his own mind. A lot of us are like that. When you've achieved as much as he has ... it's a shock to the system not to play as good as you have been. To look at other peo- ple looking at you like, 'Hey, you're not the same guy,' that's hard to take." Els, perhaps more than any other player, has a deep golfing connection with Woods. It's awesome and it's really been what we've been about." The Raiders (9-2) have lived by that motto to move to the top of the standings in the AFC. One obvious pos- itive Chip Kelly took from the 49ers' 10th straight defeat was Colin Kaepernick's steady im- provement "in all aspects" since reprising his starting role six games ago. Scoring points, however, is a vital area the 49ers haven't pro- gressed enough. The 49ers (1-10) set a francise record for consecutive losses Sun- day when they fell 31-24 at Miami, with Kaepernick getting tackled two yards shy of a tying touch- down run on the final play. It wasn't a triumphant end- ing but that game was Kaeper- nick's best to date, especially sta- tistically. He set season highs by throwing three touchdown passes and rushing for 113 yards. "He's made a progression from game to game, where you can see improvement from him, which is what you're looking for," Kelly said Monday on a media confer- ence call from Orlando, where the 49ers are practicing this week ahead of Sunday's game at Chi- cago. "It's in all facets," Kelly said of Kaepernick's progress. "It's in everything: his pocket presence, his accuracy, his understanding of protections. All that stuff has improved from the Buffalo game." Sunday's 24 points were the most they've scored in Kaeper- nick's six starts. Overall, the 49ers are averaging 20.7 points per game, ranking them 22nd in the league through Sunday's games. Kelly said his offense did a "nice job" Sunday, when they amassed 475 yards, their second- largest output in his first season as coach. "The offense did a nice job. I just wish with 475 yards of offense you'd have more than 24 points," Kelly said. Kelly rued how the 49ers of- fense got stopped by their own mistakes on "all but one" drive. Garrett Celek's lost fumble in the red zone particularly stung. Kelly also pointed out how mul- tiple penalties made their work harder, and those got called on right tackle Trent Brown (face- mask, twice), Joe Staley (hold- ing) and Kaepernick (delay of game). Kelly credited Kaepernick's improvement to simply gain- ing more repetition in the new scheme, having been limited with health issues through the offseason and part of train- ing camp while Blaine Gabbert served as QB1. 49ERS Kelly says Ka pe rn ic k is improving 49ERS PAGE 2 KINGS PAGE 2 SPORTS ยป redbluffdailynews.com Tuesday, November 29, 2016 MORE AT FACEBOOK.COM/RBDAILYNEWS AND TWITTER.COM/REDBLUFFNEWS B1
