AsThanksgivingap- proaches we are more prone to count our bless- ings, and that's al- ways a good thing. We may have pleasant memories of family and friends gathering together for a delicious meal and friendly chat- ter throughout the day. There's usually someone in the crowd suggesting we tell what we are thankful for. Most of us are very fa- miliar with the usual com- ments such as: "I'm thank- ful for this big turkey and mashed potatoes — my pay raise — my new car — my job — my loved ones and great friends, etc." Thanksgiving Day is a perfect time for per- sonal reflection too. It's a time to consider the faith- ful and enduring love of God working in our lives. "Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures for- ever" (Psalm 118:29). While there may be turmoil and sadness all around us, we can still hold fast to the truths found in the Word of God — the Holy Bible. Believers in Jesus Christ can reflect upon the good- ness of God every day. Co- lossians 1:12:-14 states, "giving thanks to the Fa- ther who has qualified us to be partakers of the in- heritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of dark- ness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins." We know that life's cir- cumstances can change in a moment. The happi- ness we may have been en- joying can be swept away as quickly as a tiny ant is stepped on! Perhaps we have a built-in stress man- ager, but all our usual op- tions frequently disap- pear "into the sunset." Yet, when we are follow- ing the Jesus pathway to eternal life, we may fal- ter for a moment, but are quickly renewed, strength- ened and encouraged by the precious Holy Spirit of God. Yes, God is good. Phi- lippians 4:7 says, "And the peace of God, which sur- passes all understand- ing, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Therefore, being thankful can be a daily blessing when life is sea- soned with the peace of God, provided by God's loving grace. I frequently think of Pe- ter. At times we tend to be much like him. Remember how brave Peter was as he stepped out on the wa- ter to walk towards Jesus? Then, like us he looked at the waves and faltered just long enough to find himself sinking. Yet as he called out for help, Je- sus rescued him. We can read this account in the 14th chapter of Matthew. In verse 30 we see Peter frightened — "But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out saying, 'Lord save me!' And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him …" Yes, we are often res- cued by our Lord when we falter a bit. He reinstates us and lifts us up again. How wonderful — how marvelous is our precious Savior! We have much to be thankful about each day. We can liken a new day as an opportunity for life and joy. Will we un- wrap our gift of life or toss it aside? Will we contin- ually give praises to God who does all things well? Mark 7:37 says, "… He has done all things well. He makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak." We can also say, "Our Lord does do all things well." Praise His holy name. We all worship some- thing and give accounts of praise to many things. Sometimes we praise peo- ple, and often we praise the material things in life. Respecting people, lov- ing people, and appreciat- ing good material things is pleasing to our Lord. Yet, because He loved us first, we love Him. "We love Him because He first loved us" (1 John 4:19). Our first priority is to praise, love, and serve God. Psalms 150:6 says, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." Surely the One we serve always does things well. Whether we are in feast or famine we can trust and praise Him. We are able to have peace and joy in our lives because of God's marvel- ous grace. Even amid the changing world conditions peace of mind is ours, and joy unspeakable is found in personally knowing Je- sus Christ, the only be- gotten Son of God. "Great peace have those who love Your law; and noth- ing causes them to stum- ble" (Psalm 119:165). As we feed our stomach with such wonderful food on Thanksgiving Day, let us pause to remember the One who provides all good things for us. The One who paints art in our heart and gives us poetry in our soul remains the One we can praise.May we pause to remember Him with thankful hearts every day and especially on Thanksgiving Day. GODTALK Hearts full of thanksgiving Patricia Martin By Zeina Karam The Associated Press KARAMLIS, IRAQ There were gasps, followed by tears at a small church in northern Iraq as a group of Christians returned to their parish Sunday to find that everything had been destroyed, including the statue of the Virgin Mary, which Islamic State mili- tants had decapitated be- fore they left. A confessional had been turned into a closet, a tomb had been desecrated, red prayer benches were burned. As the Rev. Thabet Habibrecitedprayersatthe St. Addai church, the sound of broken glass crunched beneath worshippers' feet. Keramlis, a Christian town on the Nineveh plains in northern Iraq, fell to IS inAugust2014,twomonths after the extremist group took Iraq's second-largest cityofMosulandsurround- ing areas, sending most of its inhabitants fleeing. The town was retaken by Iraq forces three weeks ago as part of the push for Mosul, but most of its homes were destroyed in the process. Manyresidentsofthean- cient Assyrian town some 18 miles (30 kilometers) southeast of Mosul now live in camps in Iraq's Kurdish region. Hundreds of others fled to neighboring coun- tries, Europe, the United States and elsewhere. Some who returned Sun- day came to attend a prayer service in their hometown, and check on their homes. Emotions ran high when the church bell tolled for the first time in more than two years, but stand- ing amid the ruins of their church, few could summon hope for the future. "It was amazing, I got goose bumps. The bell for us means a great deal," said Sahir Shamoun, an athlet- ics teacher who drove four hours with his wife from Zakho, near the Turkish border, to check on their home Sunday. Shamoun and his wife found their home largely standing, amid a vista of al- most completely destroyed houses; but all their elec- tronics and furniture had been stolen. "I feel great sadness," he said. "I'm not sure when or if I'll be back. I think of my children, will they have a future here?" Christians once con- stituted a sizeable minor- ity in Iraq, but their num- bers have dwindled since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion as many have emigrated to the Westto escapeviolence.
