PAge 2 D r. Erik J. Ramos '04 is grateful for Sigma Phi Epsilon and his brothers' support. With them, he was able to grow as a leader and become even more confident in his career path—music. "This brotherhood supported me and guided me in my lifelong goals," EJ says. "The upperclassmen were wonderful for advice and guidance." Before joining Indiana Zeta, he noticed the diversity and standards that were at the core of the fraternity. "A Balanced Man chapter was exactly what I needed," EJ says, "If you want to be the best, you have to surround yourself by the best." Out of all of his fraternity memories, he holds the ritual as his favorite and most special moments. He still keeps in touch with fraternity brothers, including one of his best friends, Steve Gibbons '04. "Being able to share life experiences with current brothers at Valpo is priceless," EJ says. "The bond and common values are all still there, which makes an instant connection between old and young." EJ is a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army band, "Pershing's Own," which is the premier band of the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C. As a trumpeter/bugler in the Ceremonial Band, his duties include funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, wreath laying ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and many other ceremonies throughout the D.C. area. He is also a member of the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, which plays for dozens of ceremonies annually at the White House. The Herald Trumpets will be playing for the 2017 presidential inauguration. He and his wife, Amanda, have two children, William and Weston. In his spare time, he enjoys running and brewing beer. EJ just completed his fifth Tough Mudder race this year and is about to run the Army Ten-Miler for the third year in a row.
