Now comes some one and recommends that we take all the hobo ele- ment in this country and make soldiers of them, keeping our own boys at home. This sentiment is often voiced on the street but has never become far enough advanced to get into a public address. The hobo doubtless would make a good soldier in time of peace, but the man that won't fight for a living, and is too infernal shiftless to assume the responsibili- ties of making a home and rearing a family would be a poor stick for the nation to lean on in time of a cri- sis. The theory in sending the hobo into the army is to get rid of him, but the army is supported to meet an emergency and sterner stuff is required than tramps. He who seriously advocates a standing army of tramps can not be very strong for preparedness. — Nov. 9, 1916 100YEARSAGO...
