Don- ald Trump plunged into his final-week sprint to Elec- tion Day Monday decidedly on his terms: unleashing a harsh new attack against Democrat Hillary Clinton in Michigan, a state that hasn't favored a Republi- can for president in nearly three decades. His message was wel- comed by supporters, but his location frustrated anx- ious Republicans who fear their nominee is riding his unorthodox political play- book too long — even as Clinton's developing email problems offer new political opportunity. "Her election would mire our government and our country in a constitu- tional crisis that we cannot afford," Trump declared in Grand Rapids, pointing to the FBI's renewed exami- nation of Clinton's email practices as evidence the former secretary of state might face a criminal trial as president. National polls show a tightening race. But with more than 23 million bal- lots already cast through early voting, it's unclear whether Trump has the time or capacity to dramat- ically improve his standing over the next week in states like Michigan, where few political professionals in ei- ther party expect a Republi- can victory on Nov. 8. Clinton, defending her- self from the new FBI ex- amination, focused Mon- day on battleground Ohio, a state Trump's team con- cedes he must win. "There is no case here," Clinton insisted. "Most peo- ple have decided a long time ago what they think about all this." Amid the attacks and counterattacks, the race for the White House remains at its core a test of a simple question: Will the conven- tional rules of modern-day campaigns apply to a 2016 election that has been any- thing but conventional? For much of the year, Clinton has pounded the airwaves with advertis- ing, assembled an expan- sive voter data file and con- structed a nationwide po- litical organization that dwarfs her opponent's. The Democratic presi- dential nominee and her allies in a dozen battle- ground states have more than 4,800 people knock- ing on doors, making phone calls and otherwise work- ing to support her candi- dacy. Clinton's numbers, as reported in recent cam- paign filings, tripled those of Trump and the national and state Republican par- ties. By Eric Tucker and Michael Biesecker The Associated Press WASHINGTON The FBI will have to sort through thou- sands of newly discovered emails in its renewed ex- amination of the practices of Hillary Clinton and her aides, a U.S. official said Monday, raising questions about whether any find- ings might be released be- fore Election Day. The Justice Department, moving to address concerns over the timing of the rev- elation of the emails and a potential post-election spill- over, said Monday it would "dedicate all necessary re- sources" to concluding the review promptly. The timing matters be- cause Donald Trump has been assailing Clinton ever more vigorously since FBI Director James Comey re- vealed the existence of the emails in a remarkable and ambiguous letter to Con- gress last Friday. He said agents would take steps to review the messages, which were found on a computer seized during an unrelated investigation involving the estranged husband of a Clinton aide. Rep. Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former New York congressman, is be- ing investigated in connec- tion with online communi- cations with a teenage girl. He was separated this year from Huma Abedin, one of Clinton's closest advisers. At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said he would neither de- fend nor criticize the tim- ing of Comey's disclosure. But he also said President Barack Obama does not be- lieve Comey was trying to influence the election, or strategizing to benefit one candidate or party. "He's in a tough spot, and he's the one who will be in a positiontodefendhisactions in the face of significant crit- icism from a variety of legal experts, including individu- als who served in senior De- partmentofJusticepositions in administrations that were ledbypresidentsinbothpar- ties," Earnest said. It was not immediately clear exactly how many emails have been recov- ered or what significance, if any, they might have. But the U.S. official who spoke to The Associated Press said the trove numbers in the thousands and the FBI, which had a warrant to be- gin the review, would be focusing on those deemed pertinent to its earlier Clin- ton email server investiga- tion. It's unclear how many emails might be relevant. In its letter to lawmak- ers, the department prom- ised to "continue to work closely with the FBI and together dedicate all nec- essary resources and take appropriate steps as expe- ditiously as possible." The FBI and Justice De- partment closed that inves- tigation, which examined whether Clinton and her aides had mishandled clas- sified information, without charges in July. The official who spoke to the AP was not authorized to discuss an ongoing inves- tigation by name and spoke on condition of anonymity. The fact that another cache of emails potentially important to the investiga- tion has only recently been discovered raises an imme- diate question: How could Abedin have been unaware of their existence?
