PaGe 2 Theta Chi T he Drake Relays took place over the weekend of April 29-30 last spring. You never know what the weather will bring, but it did not disappoint our expectations. It was cold and rainy most of the weekend! That didn't stop the brotherhood from dedicating the Matt Gaumer Alumni Room and taking in many social events over the weekend. There was a large turnout of brothers paying tribute to Chapter Eternal Brother matt Gaumer '93. It was difficult to keep a dry eye as his pledge brothers told story upon story of what kind of man Matt was and the influence he had upon so many, not only as an undergraduate but as an alumnus as well. One of the unexpected highlights of the weekend was a relatively unorganized age- appropriate undergraduate and alumni road trip to The Alpine Lounge on Ingersoll Avenue. We literally took over the joint and drank them out of their cooler inventory. I don't think the place has ever had that many patrons at one time. The unnamed fraternity that showed up a few hours after us was thoroughly disappointed to learn that the inventory was spent. Please join us next April 28-29 as we usher in relays 2017. The new chapter house continues to look incredible and runs like a well-oiled machine. Remember, we will continue to need your help to make sure it stays that way! We all remember the creed, and leverage those ideas as we find our own particular path in life. Whether you are religious, spiritual, or simply humanistic, the ideals of Theta Chi inform our lives. We lend a hand to all who seek it. We care about our communities, our country, and our world. We care about the institutions that have made us successful entrepreneurs, executives, and fathers. All of us believe in knowledge, are concerned about the culture in which we grow our families, and demonstrate our personal character every day in how we live our lives. underGrAduAtes tAkinG resPonsiBility The house is in great shape. The young men did a terrific job during Work Week and throughout the year. At Work Week, todd elverson '78 helped out by directing the construction of a wall in the basement storage room. The house is turning out to be efficient, sturdy, and safe. Unfortunately, we had a minor break-in early in the fall term. A few wallets and some cash were taken, but no one was hurt or confronted during the robbery. We are now installing security cameras. our comPetitiveness on cAmPus It is important for alumni to understand that recruitment is a very competitive event. Our costs make us one of the most expensive houses when viewed by potential new members. We need to pay off the mortgage as quickly as is reasonable. Right now our mortgage balance is $1,195,801.61 (September 27, 2016). We will continue to pay down the debt as quickly as we can, but need as much help as we can get from all of you. Ultimately, to be fully sustainable we need the mortgage to be paid down to at least $500,000.
