Alumni Achievement Award, and the Suns' naming of the Al McCoy Media Center in 2007. "It's been a pretty dramatic career and a good ride. When I joined the Suns, there were only 16 teams in the league, and now I've broadcast from the NBA Finals twice and a few times from the All-Star games as well. It's been a really fantastic career." Even with all that has transpired in the years since college, Al still looks back fondly on his time in Theta Chi. "The entire college experience is not only academic. There's a social aspect of working with people and the fraternity provides an advantage in that regard. There was also a thrust for service to the university community, and I like to see that process continue. It's gratifying to see the development of the chapter today and what they've accomplished on campus. I visited the house recently and greatly enjoyed meeting the brothers." Al makes his home in Phoenix. His wife, Georgia, has passed on, but the two were married for 56 years. They have three sons, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. We all knew each other very well, got involved in things together, and had a good experience." For his own part, Al was involved in the drama, speech, and fine arts programs at Drake. The school didn't have a major in broadcasting at the time, but Al paved his own way, working for radio stations in Des Moines and collaborating with several other brothers also interested in the field, a "meeting of the minds," as Al recalls. He helped to start a campus nightclub, held each week at the union, lining up entertainment and musicians. It was from these beginnings that Al launched a fantastic career in broadcasting. With a start at radio stations in Des Moines and Iowa City, in 1958, he moved to Arizona to do play-by- play announcing for the Triple-A Phoenix Giants baseball club. Al covered numerous sports teams, but in 1972 he began his tenure with the Phoenix Suns. He has entered his 45th season with the team, long ago earning the title, "Voice of the Suns." His contributions to the team and the field of broadcasting have been recognized with the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Drake's
