8A Daily News – Saturday, July 14, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Are there Scriptures that apply to all situations in life? McClatchy Newspapers LOVE GOD, LOVE PEOPLE The Rev. Betty Hanna-Witherspoon, pastor of Ebenez- er A.M.E. Church: In the 22nd chapter of Matthew a lawyer asked Jesus the question, "Teacher, which com- mandment in the law is the greatest?" Stay strong in prayer shall love the Lord your with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two command- ments hang all the law and the prophets." These two commandments are based on Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18. They were an integral aspect of the culture of Jesus' time. The 10th chapter of Luke says, "And who is my neigh- bor?" This question reflects our human desire to exclude some persons and groups from the circle of love. It also allows Jesus the opportunity to explain that our neighbor is the person least like us, in this case, the Good Samaritan, the famous parable of love as demonstrated by the least likely person expected to exhibit love to those listening to Jesus. We Christians are to choose those per- sons or groups from whom we feel most alienated, most different and then love them just like we love ourselves. The Wesley Study Bible expands on this theme by declaring that "Caring for a neighbor goes hand in hand with loving God _ we can expand our hearts to care for neighbors down the street and around the world." These Scriptures apply at all times and in every situation. Love God and love people, for God is love. • Email the Rev. Betty Hanna-Witherspoon at ebenez- erchurch38@att.net. 'DO WHAT IS RIGHT' Rabbi Mark Levin of Congregation Beth Torah, Over- Jesus answered him with foundational Scripture, "You land Park, Kan.: There are many. Deuteronomy 6:4: "Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One." No matter what your circumstances in life, remember that the one God loves you. Leviticus 19:18: "Love your neighbor as yourself." God commands us to be constantly aware of our neigh- bors' welfare, in addition to our own. When we empathize with the pain of the other; when we identify ourselves in the other, then we begin to create the ties that bind our lives in a social covenant, upon which a society can be built that surpasses "survival of the fittest." Deuteronomy 6:18: "You shall do what is right and good in the eyes of the Lord." Even when you think that you are acting according to God's will, check to see that you are not simply slavishly following some dictate with- out doing what is right. God demands righteous conduct. Sometimes we engross ourselves in the letter of the law and forget the spirit of the law, such as applying God's compassion. Have you been praying for something for a long time without seeing change? Praying for some- thing and not seeing results can be discouraging. I want to tell you don't give up. Don't stop doing good. "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart." Gal 6:9 The other day I was spraying the weeds around our house. The next day I went out to the side yard to get something and noticed the weeds I had sprayed looked the same. Two days later still no change even though the spray bottle said, "fast acting!" My question was whether I should spray again or believe the instructions on the bottle that said, "Fast acting, kills weeds by the roots." Actually, the first day I saturated the weeds with the spray the spray went to work killing the weeds even though I didn't see results. The same thing is true about prayer. Prayer starts working immediately in the unseen realm. Just because we don't see immediate change in a situation that we have prayed about doesn't mean our prayers are not working. This is where the, "don't grow weary" part comes into play. As people of faith, we stand firm on what we believe and are patient until the manifestation of what we have prayed comes to pass. What we believe is the doing good part. Do we believe God is working on our behalf? Do we believe the promises we have declared over the situation? Do we believe that there is a positive shift- ing taking place in the unseen realm? Are we stay- ing in faith and out of doubt and unbelief? Remember, the Bible says that Christians are to walk by faith, not by sight, or by the things that are seen. Paul makes the state- ment that he has fought the good fight of faith. Walk- ing by faith is not always the easiest walk there is. There will always be a fight to it but whether you can say it was a good fight of faith or a bad one is entire- ly up to you. A good fight of faith is one that you come out victorious and a bad fight is one that you lost. God doesn't change His ways so that puts the outcome of the fight of faith on us. Every person who has ever com- peted and come out on top has been prepared! Preparation simply means to make or get ready. A builder has the plans ready and has looked over them before he ever touches a tool and builds. Paul com- pares the Christian life to that of a race. Anyone who has ever won a race was well prepared before they showed up at the track. An athlete spends hours upon hours studying their opponent and getting their body and mind into shape long before game day. As Christians we also need to be Gospel concert Liberty Quartet with opener God's Country Band will be in concert at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 3 at First Church of God, 1005 S. Jackson St. in Red Bluff. The concert is free, but a love offering will be accepted. Music. A people's favorite in the gospel field, Liberty not only is energetic and humorous, but most importantly, have a heart to lead their listeners into an intimate worship experience. Liberty Quartet will thrill with great Southern Gospel Micah 6:8: "What is it that the Lord requires of you? Only to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God." In all of this, are you congratulating yourself for being God's servant, and thereby exalting yourself? Or do you recognize that "for this you were created," and rejoice in fulfilling God's plan? • Email Rabbi Mark Levin at mlevin@beth- torah.org. prepared before we face the trials of life. Set some time aside for God, seek out His plan, build your belief system on the word, exercise your faith, pray, learn how to be led by the Holy Spirit and then when trials come, and they will come, you will be ready and you will come out on top. Preparation is the key factor to fighting the good fight of faith and winning. Larry Jensen GodTalk What we believe after we pray is just as impor- tant as what we believed when we prayed. When Jesus cursed the fig tree, it dried up at the roots first, in the unseen realm. Then the next day as he and his disciples passed by Peter noticed the tree was dried up. If you don't grow weary in doing good, faith and patience, you will reap. Father, that you begin working in the unseen realm as soon as I pray and that in due season I will reap, if I do not lose heart.
