Hot covers us with perspir- ing bodies, the need to water or flowers and vegetables. coolers, fans and air conditioners add to our monthly bills. Some of us look forward to time in the mountains where the temperature can be warm or cool. We are shad- ed by many evergreen trees and if it is cool we add an extra shirt or jack- et. Green bushes and trees of the mountains, sooth the souls of mountain people. Yes, I am defi- nitely a person having been born in the mountains of Colorado. Unfortunately, Colorado has been suffering a myriad number of fires this summer. We are praying unceasingly that fire will not enter our California mountains and cause problems. To be braced by the beautiful branches of mountain trees is calming and cooling. To sit on the porch of our mountain retreat is an annual reward. To hear the voices of other mountain people is comforting and calming. A trip to Water our mountains often renews our strength and holds any stress back from us while we enjoy Endrud, A Norwegian word meaning: "The End of The Road." We see the sun rise and set, breathe deeply the aroma of the pine trees; we put our American flag in our porch pole, and watch for any mountain animals that may come by through our trees. We listen to Public Radio and cook some foods from scratch just like we did in the olden days. We visit with friends, take the dogs for walks, share goodies with those who visit us. We read and nap, eat and sleep and when the time comes to go to the valley, we slowly pack up the car and head down hill to summer val- ley warmness. Each wonderful day at our mountain retreat is rewarding and yes sometimes challenging. The following poem was written by Edgar A. Guest. Carolyn Barber too small To shelter friends who come to call. Though low the roof and small its space It holds the Lord's abounding grace, And every simple room may be Endowed with happy The Little Home The little house is not memory. Edgar A. Guest. Our little mountain home is so very much like that of Guest's poem, we love it both long and little. Edgar Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992.
