The Buckeye Phi Psi he Columbus Alumni Association of Phi Kappa Psi continues to move forward, building momentum from an inspiring, well-attended Founders Day last February. Association President Mitch Grant '78 and committee members Shawn Priebe '95, Stephen Wilson '07, and Robbie Mulloy, Kentucky Beta '09 are putting together activities and alumni outreach to connect and bring together Phi Psis throughout the area. Thanks go out to Christopher Fahey '08 for his help in alumni communications. Opportunities exist for increased alumni involvement from our recently established Chapters at Capital University, Muskingum, and Ohio University. Our newest Chapter is to be chartered at Denison in 2017. Founders day is scheduled for Friday evening on February 17, 2017, at Columbus Hofbrauhaus. If you have any questions, please contact Mitch at mitch.grant@ lfg.com or Shawn at shawnpriebe@msn.com. Heartland Bank, led by Scott McComb '86, was once again in the news. It will build its new headquarters in Whitehall in the newly developing Whitehall Community Park. This six-acre site on North Hamilton Road proves much more viable than the old Terminal at Port Columbus. Besides the new Whitehall branch, the bank recently opened one in Hilliard and will soon open a branch in Clintonville, making a total of 17 branches in Central Ohio. We had much deserved press coverage of the awarding of a 2014 National Medal of Arts by the President at a ceremony in the East Room of the White House to Ann Hamilton, a professor of art at the University. Ann is the daughter of Beth and Bob Hamilton '49. She is internationally known for her multimedia installations, incorporating unlikely materials to enhance and/or contrast with the architecture and social history of the site. Bob is one of our stalwarts and a regular at the Friday lunch. He was a mainstay in our Chapter House fundraiser and renovation. (This inadvertently escaped the last issue.) Now to the News from The Enterprise (Their Word): cting Provost Bruce McPherson has been appointed vice president and provost. His base salary is $497,000 per year. Costs for three projects are running over budget. Covelli multi-sports arena (volleyball, fencing, and wrestling) is $10 million over its $30 million budget. Secondly, the Student-Athlete Center (emphasis on the latter) is $10 million over its $32 million budget. Its uses are for weight and cardio training, lockers and the like. There's no word on whether it will have a wall of running water like the redone football locker room. There was no specific overrun mentioned in the renovation of Pomerene and Oxley Halls, with a total cost estimate of $59 million. This did include the renovation of Baker Commons to house the Office of Disability Services. ESPN and the Big Ten have agreed that ESPN and its family of networks will broadcast 25 football and 50 basketball games per year for the next six years for an average of $190 million per year. This is in addition to the agreement with Fox of $240 million per year. Reportedly, in 2017, when it all takes effect, receipts will triple to $2.64 billion, apparently over the length of the contract, for $160 million per school. (You can hear the lip- smacking in the Athletic Department from here. "The more you bring in, the more you manage and the more you're worth.") Just in case you don't subscribe to this journal, the University's athletic director, Gene Smith, received the 2016 Sports Business Journal's Athletic Director of the Year award, the 50th James J. Corbett Award. Gene is of course senior vice president and Wolfe Foundation Endowed Athletic Director of The Enterprise. As predicted in this very column, beer sales have been expanded throughout the entire Ohio Stadium. The pilot project of selling beer to Buckeye Club members and purchasers (renters) of luxury boxes went so well that The Enterprise expects no problems with general sales. I can personally attest that I noted no arrests of any accountants, lawyers, or captains-of-industry (or even lieutenants) during this rigorous testing period. By the way, this reportedly disqualifies many of the teens who work for the churches, high school teams, and other non-profits who man the concession stands. These sales are expected to raise an additional $350,000 (why bother?), which a spokesman said was enough to pay for two additional police officers and an alcohol abuse study program (that's why). The Enterprise has now trademarked the phrase "Buy Buckeye" to help fans remember not to buy knockoffs. The phrase is part of an anti- counterfeit awareness campaign on social media, according to the assistant vice president for business advancement. Also trademarked is the name "Woody Hayes." Greg Schiano, former head coach at Rutgers University and NFL's Tampa Bay, was hired as associate head football coach/defensive coordinator on a one-year contract for $600,000. Reportedly, the salary was so low because his previous contract buyouts would have been offset. He is, however, eligible for all bonuses and perks. And last, but not least, the class of 2020 is The Enterprise's brightest. The 7,600 frosh have an average ACT score of 29.2, 63% were in the top 10% of their high school class, and 95% were in the top 25%. There were 49,388 applications for admission. It was announced that this is a much more efficient and economical use of Enterprise resources. Bye-bye, Land Grant College. Hello, Columbus State!
