Rodeo FROMPAGE1 body's entitled to it. We move forward. We focus on what we can do to get this win this week versus the Bucs." Kaepernick came out with one of the most ef- ficient first-half perfor- mances of his career, post- ing a 144.1 passer rating (8 of 11, 135 yards, 1 touch- down) that ranked as his fourth-highest ever. But then came the 49ers' typical second- half collapse, and as bad as their defense was, Kae- pernick's statistics also plummeted. He was 5 of 18 for 52 yards, and all three of his sacks came after halftime. "Well, it's not just him," offensive coordinator Cur- tis Modkins said. "You say it's his numbers, but it's our numbers. Sometimes it's a drop here or there in crit- ical situations that affect those numbers. A penalty here or there and all of a sudden we're off the field, and that affects the num- bers. We've got to do better around him and that helps his numbers." Running back Mike Davis, who failed to con- vert on two short-yardage runs in a third-quarter se- quence, said Kaepernick was as impressive as usual in the huddle. "He's the same old Kap," Davis said. "He's hyping everyone up and filling them in on the needs of the play." Alas, not enough plays were made to keep up with the Bills. "We didn't come out to make plays in the second half," Kaepernick said. "Ultimately that's what it came down to. Our ex- ecution is something we need to improve upon, be- ing able to sustain that for four quarters. "… We had good mo- ments. We had some we need to correct. Personally there were throws I should have made and want to make and I need to cor- rect those this week." Coach Chip Kelly waited until Monday to announce that Kaepernick would get a second straight start ahead of Gabbert. Kaeper- nick has lost 11 of his past 14 starts. Kaepernick came away pleased with Kelly's scheme in his first full- game action, having only previously played the final three snaps in the season opener and three quarters in the exhibition season. "That's something, for me, I felt a lot more confi- dent in the scheme we have and the clarity of where we want to go with the foot- ball against certain cover- ages," Kaepernick said. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 MLB American League Champion- ship Series, Game 5, Cleve- land Indians at Toronto Blue Jays:1p.m.,TBS.
