THE CAL SIG ALPHA BETA CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY Fall 2016 Summer Chapter House Updates Start the Year Off Right for Alpha Beta Alumni, Join Us This Fall! T he fall semester at the University of California, Berkeley began on August 24 and the Sigma Chis have hit the ground running. Recruitment began the same day school started and Sigma Chi is proud to announce that 16 new members accepted bids. They are excited to learn about our honored traditions and eager to become active members of the chapter. Under the guidance of Magister Trent Speetzen '17, we expect they will do well and be great assets to the chapter once they complete the pledge process. Over the summer, many of the actives were busy with internships that took them around the country. I heard of brothers working in Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles to name a few. Others took part in some of the leadership training given by Sigma Chi National. This year, the Balfour Leadership Conference was held at Bowling Green University in Ohio. Three of our actives attended along with Chapter Advisor Del Tacconi, Utah State '62. Other members of the chapter volunteered at Camp Kesem. Our chapter has contributed considerable funds to the Camp and we are all proud to be associated with such a worthy cause. Congratulations to the men of Sigma Chi for all their activities and involvement over the summer. The Housing Corporation continued the process of restoring the chapter house over the summer. Two more bedrooms were renovated. All bedrooms on the first and second floors have been renovated over the past three summers. We also replaced the dining room floor and made some other City of Berkeley required upgrades. We are all excited for another Golden Bear football season. The team started out the season with a solid win over the Hawaii Rainbow in Sydney, Australia. Many great matchups are scheduled for this season. Saturday game days are one of the best ways to check in on the progress of the chapter house. Please stop by and visit if you have time before any of the home games. Seeing some of the Sigma Chi brothers in pregame mode is always exciting in itself! As has been the case for over 35 years, the Big Game Lunch is the premier alumni event of the year. The lunch is organized by Steven Rocha '78, with help from his great committee of Ed Glover '79, Vincent Rocha '79, and Charles Wingard '80. The lunch will be on November 18 at 1:30 p.m. The venue is still to be determined, but Steven is making efforts to return to Schroeders Restaurant in San Francisco, Calif., where it has almost always been held. Stay tuned for the final announcement of the location. Be sure to wear your best blue and gold tie and join in the festivities. Be sure to check out the photos of past Big Game Lunches on page 4! Have a great fall. Go Bears! Our great hall has new floors, multiple rooms were renovated, and we now have a garbage disposal in the kitchen.
